A new terminal for the import of liquefied natural gas (LNG) in Wilhelmshaven is intended to make Germany more independent of gas imports from Russia - however, the German Environmental Aid has called for an immediate halt to construction to protect an underwater biotope.

Economics and Climate Minister Robert Habeck (Greens) has now contacted the association directly.

"Here I would like to expressly warn against suing," said Habeck in the evening on the television program "RTL Direkt": "If we don't have the LNG terminals and the gas doesn't come from Russia, there is no security of supply in Germany guaranteed.«

In case of doubt, the lawsuit could cause Germany to become more dependent on Russian energy imports again, according to Habeck: "You shouldn't do that at this point."

Habeck pointed out that Germany had bought four ships on the world market on which liquid gas can be converted and fed into the gas network.

Two of them will be available in December.

"If we didn't have them, we really would be even more defenseless in this situation."

The environmental aid had justified the demanded construction stop, among other things, that porpoises had to be protected, but would be endangered by the construction.

Against this background, Habeck referred to his north German origins.

In Schleswig-Holstein he had already made great efforts to protect the whales together with the fisheries.

"I love porpoises, I come from the coast," says Habeck: "I'm the biggest porpoise fan in the federal government."

Habeck also commented on environmental aid as an organization.

She is an important club that has done a lot for Germany.

Lower Saxony's energy minister, Olaf Lies, had previously described the environmental aid's contradiction as "remarkably inappropriate".

"A lot of people are working day and night under high pressure to ensure that Germany can get out of the Russian embrace as quickly as possible when it comes to gas," said the SPD politician to the German Press Agency.

»The interim solution with floating LNG terminals is an elementary pillar.«
