The LCSD announced the reopening of public beaches from May 5. There will be lifeguards on duty at 15 beaches, including Deep Water Bay, Shek O, Hung Shing Yeh Bay, Silver Mine Bay, Pui O, Lido Beach, Rehabilitation Bay, Ma Wan East Bay, Clear Water Bay Second Bay, Silverstrand Bay, Xiamen Bay, Butterfly Bay, Golden Beach and Tai Po Lung Mei Beach.

Lifeguard services at other beaches will continue to be suspended. The LCSD reminds the public not to swim at beaches without lifeguard services to avoid accidents.

The number of tourists in the 2020 swimming season dropped by nearly 80% compared with 2019, from 9.6 million to 1.9 million last year.

Among them, Repulse Bay has the largest number of visitors, with an average of more than 11,000 visitors per day during holidays and an average of 15,000 visitors per day during peak periods. Shek O and Deep Water Bay are also in the Southern District.

When going to the beach on holiday, in addition to considering whether there will be too many people on the chosen beach, I believe that water quality is also another important consideration.

According to the "Hong Kong Beach Water Quality 2020 Annual Report", there are currently 6 beaches in Hong Kong rated as first class, 4 of which are open with lifeguards on duty. In addition to the most popular Repulse Bay and Shek O, there are also South Bay. and Hung Shing Yeh Bay on Lamma Island.

In 2020, Nanwan has 163 and 488 visitors on weekdays and holidays respectively, which is 64.6 times and 22.7 times different from Repulse Bay in the same southern district.

In addition, the recently opened artificial beach Lung Mei Beach was rated Grade 1 on June 16 and June 23, according to the Environmental Protection Agency's water quality rating.

However, it is worth noting that the LCSD said that in the first five days since the artificial sandy Lung Mei Beach was opened to the public, it received 90 cases of citizens being stabbed by sea urchins or jellyfish.
