The necessary German courses for refugees from Ukraine cost money.

Money the Vhs doesn't have after the pandemic.

Now a Wolfratshausen club stepped in.

Wolfratshausen

– A German course for Ukrainian refugees has been set up at the adult education center (Vhs) in Wolfratshausen.

The Franz-Geiger-Verein takes on the financing.

Further courses are to follow;

sponsors are being sought for them.

"The waiting list is very long," says Vhs managing director Christine Hohnheiser.

Barbara Udosic is currently teaching 15 women, men and children vocabulary and some grammar.

The focus should be on speaking.

The teacher approaches a young woman sitting at a desk with a pad and pen in an elementary and middle school classroom.

“How are you today?” Udosic asks the participant.

"Good," she replies in German.

Most of the participants are privately housed and from Wolfratshausen, adds Gerlinde Berchtold, social and family officer for the Wolfratshausen city council.

"They appear regularly and are punctual." The current course comprises a total of 60 units and takes place twice a week, Monday and Thursday from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m.

It is intended to give the refugees an initial orientation and help them to express themselves in everyday life.

The lessons are intended as a transition until the start of the integration courses after the Pentecost holidays, says Hohnheiser.

The course is made possible by the Franz-Geiger-Verein from Wolfratshausen.

The Vhs asked him if he could cover the costs for the course instructor – the Vhs financed the rest from their own pockets.

According to Hohnheiser, the association promised an amount of around 1,500 euros very quickly and unbureaucratically.

According to its chairwoman Roswitha Beyer, the purpose of the Franz Geiger Association, which was founded in 2011, is education of any kind. A circular email to the board was sufficient.

"There was only positive feedback."

In addition to the current course, there will be two more in the morning.

They will take place until June 2nd and each comprise 18 teaching units.

According to Hohnheiser, they are already fully booked.

Because the Vhs receives daily inquiries, she would like to offer even more courses.

However, due to the tense financial situation caused by the corona, the Vhs cannot assume any further costs.

Therefore, sponsors are welcome, as are course leaders.

Educational training is necessary.

Ukrainian native speakers who teach German as teachers are also eligible.
