Due to the first maintenance, the Vöttinger tube will be closed for two days.

And this maintenance has it all.

Here all the details.

Freising

– On January 10th of this year, the Westtangente with the Vötting Tunnel as the centerpiece was opened – now the first regular safety maintenance of the tunnel technology is due.

Because the “inner workings” of the tube have it all.

For the major check, the tunnel must be completely closed to traffic from Tuesday, May 10, 9 a.m. to Thursday, May 12, around 3 p.m. (see box for information on the diversion).

It's hard to believe all the technology in the tunnel

When driving through a tunnel, drivers are hardly aware of the technology hidden in the system.

"But the installations have to be serviced regularly, just like in a car," reports city spokeswoman Christl Steinhart.

In addition to visible installations such as lighting, variable message signs, escape route signs, tunnel ventilation and the emergency call system, the Vötting Tunnel also has less visible components such as the fire alarm system, tunnel radio, drainage systems and medium-voltage system.

(By the way: everything from the region is now also available in our regular Freising newsletter.)

Steinhart: "Maintenance and cleaning work is necessary at regular intervals to ensure the functionality and interaction of the individual sensors, variable message signs and other installations in the tunnel, which have a total value of several million euros, at all times."

The maintenance work involves the following:

  • Tunnel lighting:

Testing the controller to adjust the entrance and exit lighting according to the outdoor lighting conditions.

The human eye can then adapt better and faster to the conditions.

Also: Cleaning the lights to achieve optimal illumination.

  • Tunnel ventilation

: In the event of a fire, the tunnel fans play an important role in guiding the smoke gases outside along the tunnel ceiling.

Therefore, the function must be tested regularly to ensure that the fans work properly in the event of a fire.

If tunnels are operated in two-way traffic, ventilation plays another important role: exhaust gases are transported out of the tunnel when the air quality deteriorates, thus exhaust gases also prevent a clear view.

  • Emergency call system:

It must be ensured that the emergency call system reacts correctly in the event of an incident and that the corresponding rescue chain is alerted: fire brigade, ambulance and police.

The alarm is triggered automatically as soon as the corresponding manual hazard detector is pressed.

  • Tunnel radio:

Tunnel radio is essential for emergency services, as it enables communication with everyone involved in the rescue services.

Periodic maintenance and functional checks are therefore absolutely necessary.

  • Loudspeaker system:

This system can be used to give instructions to people in the tunnel if an emergency occurs, for example in which direction to flee.

  • Fire alarm system:

It automatically detects a fire using a so-called line fire alarm cable.

The heat pole is precisely determined to within a few meters.

The rescue chain is set in motion automatically.

  • Escape route signs:

These illuminated signs show the way to the next evacuation option.

The function and replacement of the bulbs are part of the maintenance.

  • Medium voltage system:

You don't see this part when driving through the tunnel.

Regular maintenance is time-consuming and absolutely necessary to ensure the tunnel's power supply.

The tunnel has to be closed for maintenance, which is due twice a year (spring and autumn).

The city of Freising attaches great importance to "limiting the closure to what is absolutely necessary and using this time in the best possible way," emphasizes Steinhart.

During the closure, the emergency services would also have access to the tunnel to inspect it or conduct small exercises.

In addition, the entire tunnel is usually cleaned during this time.

In the Vötting tunnel, the tunnel will be cleaned for the first time after the traffic has been opened in autumn 2022.
