(CNN) --

Whether you want to start a new life abroad or just want to go on vacation abroad, getting a new passport can be an expensive undertaking.

Even the most astute and thrifty travelers can be caught off guard by the replacement of an expired (or about to expire) passport that could cost hundreds of dollars.

Once you gather all the documents and go through all the bureaucratic procedures in the country, it is expected that you will have your passport in a couple of weeks or months.

But at what price?

These are some of the most expensive passports in the world, in addition to others that are more standard in price.

The costs indicated below are expressed in local currency and in US dollars for adult passports with a validity of 10 years, unless otherwise specified.

Currency conversions are approximate as of early May 2022.

average prices

Many passports cost between US$100 and US$160, which is not little.

However, there are even more expensive ones.

Whether it's renewing or applying for a passport for the first time, Japanese citizens can expect to pay 16,000 Japanese yen (about $125).

New Zealanders can expect to pay NZ$191 (about $125) for their new passport.

Applying for an adult US passport for the first time will cost at least $165, while renewals cost $130.

For Brits looking to visit sunnier destinations, renewing a UK passport online will cost £75.50 (about $95).

For most expats living abroad, the renewal will cost a standard combined courier fee of around £106 (about US$135).

Including shipping costs, Swiss citizens will have to pay about 145 Swiss francs (about US$150).

If you haven't already been overwhelmed by prices, check out what some of the most expensive passports cost for citizens who want to travel abroad:

What Liechtenstein lacks in geographic mass, it makes up for in the cost of its passports.

Including shipping costs, citizens can expect to pay CHF 256 (about US$260) for a new passport.

The Cuban passport renewal process is different from other countries on this list.

According to the Cuban government, while buying a new passport locally costs 2,500 Cuban pesos (about US$105), and can last for a total of six years, the passport must be renewed every two years to remain valid.

Each renewal has an additional cost of 500 CUP, until the sixth year of life of the passport, where the process of purchasing a new passport is restarted.

For comparison, the cost of having a Cuban passport valid for 10 years amounts to about 6,500 CUP (about US$270).

Having a Syrian passport valid for 10 years will cost at least $600.
