But on this Tuesday, May 3, a few hours spent surveying this modest-sized city are enough to understand that the calm is only a facade.
On the road that arrives from the “border” with neighboring Moldova, several checkpoints mixing concrete blocks and sandbags were erected last week while hooded soldiers took place at the main intersections.
In the almost deserted aisles of the vegetable market, traders evoke in whispers the ambient tension.
“Everyone fears the repercussions of the war in Ukraine,
confides a honey seller,
and for the past few days, people have been flocking to the supermarket to stock up on basic necessities.”
