Israel's name plunged into a diplomatic crisis between Iran and Sweden on Wednesday after the establishment media in Tehran announced its intention to soon execute a world-renowned Swedish-Iranian doctor - Ahmadrazza Jalali - for aiding Israel's efforts to harm Iranian nuclear scientists.
According to the Iranian network ISNA, the intention is to execute the 50-year-old Jalali until May 21 because the authorities claim he spied for Israel until he was arrested in 2016 and passed on important information that allegedly helped her in the assassination operations against nuclear scientists.
The Swedish Foreign Minister and the European Union have strongly condemned the apparent intention to implement Jalali's sentence.
Swedish Foreign Minister Anne Linda tweeted on Wednesday: "There are very worrying reports that Iran may impose the death sentence on the Swedish citizen. The EU and Sweden condemn this and demand his release. We have clarified our position for a long time to the Iranian representatives, and we are in touch With them.
His trial ended in a death sentence in 2017, but so far his trial has been delayed due in part to pressure from humanitarian organizations around the world who claimed his confession was coercive, and he himself issued a letter saying he was tortured and told that if he did not confess his actions in Sweden his family would be harmed.
He claims that the Iranian authorities are harassing him because he is not willing to use his connections in European institutions to spy for Tehran.
In his "confession," he admitted that he allegedly passed classified information on Iranian nuclear scientists so that Israel could harm them.
Either way, meanwhile he is imprisoned in the infamous Owen Prison.
The announcement of the impending execution is apparently meant to put pressure on the results of the trial of an Iranian detained in Sweden named Hamed Nuri.
Nuri, who was arrested in Sweden in 2019, is accused of committing war crimes and crimes against humanity in the Iran-Iraq war in the 1980s when he participated in the systematic killing of prisoners.
The verdict in his trial is expected in July, but his trial ended this week, and immediately afterwards Iran began taking steps against Sweden, including summoning the ambassador for a reprimand.
