The use of Pegasus software to spy on women journalists tends to be very serious, since it has the ability to access photos that could facilitate sexual threats, warns Julissa Mantilla, commissioner of the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR), in an interview with Carmen Aristegui.
According to a UNESCO document presented at the "Journalism under digital siege" forum, held in Punta del Este, Uruguay, at least 73% of women journalists have suffered some type of online violence while doing their job, while 25% of those surveyed received threats of physical violence online and 18% sexual threats.
NSO Group, which markets Pegasus, has stated that it is a technology company that does not operate the system or have access to its customer data,
which are governments and official security agencies.
NSO also says the group has no connection to the phones or goals of those who use the software, and that the company is committed to terminating the contracts of customers who misuse its software.
