Brandenburg's Landtag President Ulrike Liedtke has criticized a statement by the Ukrainian Ambassador to Germany, Andriy Melnyk, about Chancellor Olaf Scholz.

“I also understand when Mr. Melnyk exaggerates some things in the situation that a war has been forced on his country and he is fighting for support for Ukraine.

But his statement about Olaf Scholz was really inappropriate, ”said Liedtke of the “Märkische Oderzeitung” (Thursday).

Potsdam - "And I don't think it's a good thing when politics is done via Twitter either." At Liedtke's invitation, Melnyk is a guest in the Brandenburg state parliament on Sunday to commemorate the 77th anniversary of the liberation from National Socialism.

Federal Chancellor Olaf Scholz (SPD) does not want to go to Ukraine, which has been attacked by Russia.

He justified this by saying that Ukraine had canceled a planned trip by Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier in mid-April.

Melnyk then told the German Press Agency: "Playing an insulted liver sausage doesn't sound very statesmanlike." In the past, the Ukrainian ambassador had repeatedly criticized the behavior of German politicians in dealing with Russia.

The President of the State Parliament introduced herself to Scholz.

"I am very glad that we have a Chancellor who acts prudently and coordinates with the parties in the government and in the Bundestag as well as with our European partners what the next step could be," she said.

At the same time, Liedtke defended Prime Minister Dietmar Woidke (SPD), who, like Liedtke and Melnyk, will speak at the commemoration on Sunday.

The Brandenburg population and political decision-makers have shown great solidarity with Ukraine since the beginning of the war.

"The prime minister doesn't have to straighten anything out." After the start of the Russian attack, Woidke said he was disappointed and, in a way, felt deceived, referring to the years of commitment to good relations with Russia.

The interview with Liedtke also appeared in the "Lausitzer Rundschau".
