The opposition is increasing the pressure on Interior Minister Strobl.

The CDU man is involved in an affair involving sexual assault by a high-ranking police officer.

He launched documents.

Green and black has his back - but for how much longer?

Stuttgart - The affair about the disclosure of a lawyer's letter to the press is getting Baden-Württemberg's Interior Minister Thomas Strobl more and more into trouble.

The opposition from the SPD and FDP called on Prime Minister Winfried Kretschmann (Greens) on Thursday to dismiss the CDU politician in view of the investigations that have now been launched against him.

A spokesman for Kretschmann said in Stuttgart: "The public prosecutor's office has started investigations, we generally do not comment on ongoing proceedings." Otherwise, what Kretschmann said on Wednesday continues to apply: "I appreciate Thomas Strobl very much and he continues to have my full trust." From the Ministry of the Interior no comment was initially available.

The parliamentary group leaders of the Greens and CDU, Andreas Schwarz and Manuel Hagel, on the other hand, backed Strobl.

The minister continues to enjoy his “complete trust,” said Schwarz.

Strobl took a comprehensive position on Wednesday and he had no reason to doubt his statements, said the Greens parliamentary group leader.

He also sees no need for the minister to rest his position during the investigation.

Hagel said he has known the CDU state chief for many years and can say: "Thomas Strobl is a decent guy." He is also a very good minister who has done a lot for internal security in the past six years.

The demands for resignation are unfounded.

Strobl continues to enjoy his "complete trust".

The CDU parliamentary group leader also said that one had to wait and see what the investigations by the Stuttgart public prosecutor revealed.

He is not entitled to anticipate or comment on the work of the public prosecutor.

The public prosecutor's office has been investigating suspected sexual harassment against a leading police officer since November.

The man is said to have harassed a chief inspector in a video chat with his ideas about sexual practices.

Because Strobl passed on a letter from the accused officer's lawyer to a journalist, he is now also under investigation.

The public prosecutor's office in Stuttgart announced on Wednesday evening that the investigation was directed against the journalist and the minister.

The reporter is suspected of having quoted official documents from the ongoing proceedings against the police officer.

Strobl, in turn, is said to have instigated him to do so.

The SPD interior expert Sascha Binder accused Kretschmann of holding his hand over the interior minister.

"It is surprising that Prime Minister Kretschmann puts his personal friendship with Strobl above the rule of law in our state," said Binder on "SWR Aktuell".

He again called for the minister's resignation.

And SPD parliamentary group leader Andreas Stoch said that the actions of the interior minister were not compatible with current law.

"Since the Minister of the Interior apparently lacks any insight, there is only one thing left: Prime Minister Kretschmann must now dismiss his Minister of the Interior!"

FDP parliamentary group leader Hans-Ulrich Rülke made a similar statement.

"However, it would be extremely detrimental to the country's reputation if the constitutional minister were effectively removed from office by the public prosecutor." dpa
