The arrests came after the Coordinating Council of Teachers' Associations of Iranian Culture called for protests on May 1, the eve of National Teachers' Day.

In mid-April, Rasoul Bodaghi, a teacher trade unionist, was sentenced to five years in prison for his participation in demonstrations, the NGO Iran Human Rights announced.
