More than 2,500 so-called welcome workers are currently working in the welcome groups to look after the refugee students.

About a month ago, around 10,000 students from Ukraine were registered at Bavarian schools, and then 15,000 at the end of April.

City day: Bavaria should continue to pay for the accommodation of refugees

From June, Bavaria's cities do not want to have to pay for part of the costs of accommodating Ukraine refugees - even if they are legally obliged to do so according to a corresponding decision by the federal cabinet.

Instead, the Free State should “take over the municipal share of the costs of accommodation, i.e. rent and heating, for refugees,” demanded the chairman of the city council, Straubing’s mayor Markus Pannermayr, on Wednesday in Munich.

Cities and districts should “not be left in the lurch” when it comes to accommodation costs.

The background to this is a decision by the Federal Cabinet that refugees from Ukraine can receive basic security from June.

As far as social benefits are concerned, they would no longer be treated as asylum seekers but as job seekers.

In this case, according to the City Day, independent cities and districts would actually have to pay about a third of the costs for accommodation and heating.

A "withdrawal" by the state in financing "would overwhelm the municipalities," Pannermayr warned.

So far, there have been reimbursements from the Free State.

Pannermayr demanded that this system of accommodation must be maintained.

This must apply to decentralized accommodation and community accommodation.
