In a recent NRW survey, the CDU is only two percentage points ahead of the SPD: Prime Minister Wüst could even have a rude awakening despite winning the election.

Düsseldorf - On May 15th, a ballot will take place in Germany's most populous federal state: North Rhine-Westphalia will elect its state parliament.

The current government of CDU Prime Minister Hendrik Wüst seems to have a chance of re-election.

In contrast to the party friends in Schleswig-Holstein, the pollsters do not see a major CDU advantage: the NRW polls point to a tight race.

This was also confirmed in data published by ZDF on Friday.

State elections 2022 in NRW: CDU and SPD are almost on a par

The current ZDF "political barometer" for the state elections in North Rhine-Westphalia currently sees Wüst's CDU just ahead of the SPD with challenger Thomas Kutschaty.

The Wahlen research group determined a value of 30 percent for the station's so-called Sunday question for the CDU.

On the other hand, 28 percent of respondents would vote for the SPD in a state election on Sunday.

Over the past few weeks, the CDU and SPD have ranked relatively consistently at around 30 percent in the opinion research institutes Insa, Forsa and Infratest dimap.

Traffic light ahead of big tasks - you can find out what the SPD, Greens and FDP are planning in our political newsletter.

The Greens could be the winners of the state elections: is a red-green coalition therefore conceivable?

infratest dimap for ZDF attested a comparatively strong increase for the Greens, which means they would come to 18 percent - almost tripling the result of the 2017 election. This result is not too surprising, given the nationwide survey soaring of the Greens, which, among other things, Insa determined in a survey at the end of April to the beginning of May.

The FDP and AfD each received seven percent of the second votes in the ZDF Sunday question.

This would not be enough for a continuation of the black-yellow coalition under Hendrik Wüst.

According to the results, a red-green or black-green coalition would be possible.

With three percent, the left would again miss the entry into the NRW state parliament.

According to the survey, the proportion of those who are not yet sure who or whether they want to vote is very high at 40 percent.

The institute Infratest dimap had determined very similar figures for the ARD in a survey published on Thursday (May 5).

Here, too, there was a neck-and-neck race between the CDU (30 percent) and SPD (28 percent).

The results of the "Voter Check" commissioned by 39 daily newspapers from North Rhine-Westphalia on Wednesday differed only slightly: the CDU received 32 percent of the votes, the SPD came to 28 percent.

When it comes to the current question of who the voters want as Prime Minister, Wüst, who took over the office from Armin Laschet (CDU) last October, is ahead with 39 percent, according to ZDF.

Challenger Kuchaty caught up compared to previous surveys and came to 31 percent.

A comparison with the 2017 state election shows above all an impressive gain by the Greens and a slight decline in the popularity of the FDP: At the time, the Greens, with 6.4 percent, were happy to have cleared the five percent hurdle.

The CDU had reached 33.0 percent.

The SPD had come to 31.2 percent, the FDP to 12.6 percent.

The AfD (7.4) also made it into the NRW state parliament five years ago.
