The "City Reading" took place in Penzberg for the first time in 2018.
The application was also successful for 2020, but the festival fell victim to the pandemic.

Penzberg – Penzberg was unsuccessful with the application for “City Reading 2022”.
But maybe there will be a replacement - another "Sta(d)tt-Lese-Fest".
Penzberg - The 26 venues for the "City Reading 2022" have now been determined, including Munich, Fürth and Innsbruck, the last location, Darmstadt, was only recently added.
In any case, Penzberg is not among this year's reading cities.
Applications that found many supporters on the festival's website were successful.
"It's a pity," said Katrin Fügener, head of the city library, commenting on the result.
Because it was a "very nice event".
On the other hand, according to Fügener, it might be a good thing.
Because the cities have no influence on when the reading festival weekend takes place.
And there you could easily have come into conflict with the Penzberg city festival this year.
In 2018, the Penzberg "City Reading" had around 2,500 visitors
The "City Reading" festival was initiated more than ten years ago by the Salzburg Innovation Workshop and its director, Sebastian Mettler.
Penzberg had successfully applied for the year 2018 at the instigation of the city library.
Around 2,500 visitors came to the town square over four days to browse through books or listen to readings.
Penzberg applied just as successfully for the year 2020. However, the city reading was canceled at the time due to the corona pandemic.
The Penzberg public library then created its own four-day "Sta(d)tt-Lese-Fest" with several readings, a poetry slam and a book flea market as a replacement.
Replacement festival and new application
Library manager Fügener could very well imagine such a replacement for this year.
Something is already being planned that is aimed at children, she says.
And what about an application for “City Reading 2023”?
The library team should think about that, she replies.
Especially since the Urmel Literature Prize will be awarded again in 2023 and this is “very complex from an organizational point of view”.
It would be better in 2024. Fügener: "We will definitely apply again because it's a great thing."
