After the flooding in August last year, the St. Wolfgang municipal council adjusted the plans for its Strassberg building area.

There is a retention basin.

The bus stops have been deleted.

St. Wolfgang

- "We don't build anything that is then under water," asserted Manuel Kühn, the project manager for the Straßberg construction area in the municipality of St. Wolfgang, at the municipal council meeting on Wednesday.

The flooding in the late summer of last year unexpectedly created a new situation for the “Strassberg” construction management process on the south-eastern outskirts of the town.

Because the Goldach had also burst its banks, sometimes on a larger scale than ever before.

An examination was therefore necessary, the councils decided in September.

The new requirements have now been incorporated into the development plan and presented.

"The issue will be resolved in such a way that the construction area in the northern area will be closed off by a new retention basin to be built," explained Kühn.

"As a result, the surface water to be drained off by additional sealing can be held back like in all other building areas and slowly fed into the Goldach."

"The cellars are to be made watertight."

Kühn again emphasized that the flooding in August 2021 was a "flood", not a heavy rain event: "You have to differentiate there."

It was particularly important to the municipal councils that the new plan was submitted to the water management office.

"If we know that something has happened, we have to protect ourselves - the water management office must know the facts," said Müller from the Armstorf electoral community (WGA).

After all, such a situation could happen again in three or four years: "We don't want to wear this shoe, it's too big."

Markus Eberl, electoral community “Development Together” added: “If something should happen, the community is off the hook.” The municipal council unanimously agreed to the application for a submission to the water management office.

In addition, there should no longer be two bus stops in the planning provided by the developer.

The reason, explained Kühn: The community intends to build a long-awaited sidewalk along the B 15 to close the gap.

After its completion, the bus stops in the north (500 meters) and south (300 meters) can be safely reached on foot.

School bus stops in Straßberg are therefore not necessary, and there is only a right to transport if the distance to school is more than two kilometers.

The bus stops would also entail an unnecessary financial burden.

A flood of the magnitude of last summer can certainly be assessed as a medium disaster situation.

Another item on the agenda was to warn the population in the event of a disaster.

To improve the infrastructure, it is currently possible to install appropriate sirens, which can also be used to warn the population of disasters with voice announcements.

"There is a special federal funding program for this," reported Head of Administration Christian Miksch.

"Funding program, that always sounds good, but is it necessary?" asked Deputy Mayor Konrad Bernhard.

The community already has seven sirens for fire alarms.

The sirens in St. Wolfgang and Lappach would have to be converted for the voice announcements, and new locations would have to be found in the districts of Armstorf and Schönbrunn.

The municipal council decided unanimously to "refrain from upgrading" with further sirens "for the time being".

The special funding program will run until the end of 2023. "Let's see how this all develops," said Beatrix Contardo, from WG Armstorf.
