Ukraine claims to have killed 12 Russian generals since the war began.

Intelligence information from the United States may also have helped Kiev's army.

Munich/Kyiv – For Russian President Vladimir Putin, the Russian war in Ukraine is far from going as he had imagined.

Observers agree that Putin did not expect such resistance from Ukraine.

SPD foreign politician Michael Roth even sees Russia's attack as lost.

"Putin and Russia have long since failed in Ukraine," the chairman of the Foreign Affairs Committee in the Bundestag told ZDF yesterday.

"Ukraine can even win this war." The brutal Russian actions are above all an "act of desperation," said Roth.

Ukraine war: Kyiv reports 12 killed Russian generals - USA is said to have provided information

Devastating for Russia: Allegedly, several Russian generals have already been killed by Ukrainian forces.

The Ukrainian army claims to have killed 12 Russian generals through targeted fire since Russia's war of aggression began in February.

And apparently that was not possible without help from the West.

As the New York Times reports, the United States provided the Ukrainian army with important information.

Citing intelligence sources, the US newspaper writes that the US is specifically tracking down the locations of “the mobile headquarters of the Russian army” and is sharing this information.

The Ukrainians were therefore able to attack the command posts with artillery.

The US National Security Council says the US government is "providing information on the battlefield to help Ukrainians defend their country," according to a spokeswoman.

However, the US has no intention of killing Russian generals, the spokeswoman said.

Moscow does not confirm loss of generals - ceasefire in Mariupol broken

The killing of the alleged twelve generals was not confirmed by the Russian side.

That such high-ranking officers fall is considered unusual.

Only the death of General Andrei Sukhovetsky, deputy commander of the 41st Army, was confirmed in early March.

As the “Spiegel” reports, General Valery Gerasimov is said to have narrowly escaped death from an artillery strike in Izyum in eastern Ukraine.

Gerasimov is the chief of staff of the Russian armed forces and belongs to Putin's inner circle.

He is said to have gone to the front himself to advance the faltering offensive in the Donbass.

Ukrainian fighters, meanwhile, have accused Russian troops of breaching the agreed ceasefire to evacuate civilians from the Azovstal steelworks in the port city of Mariupol.

"Once again, the Russians broke the ceasefire promise and did not allow the evacuation of civilians who continue to hide in the plant's basements," Deputy Commander of Ukraine's Azov Regiment Svyatoslav Palamar said in a video message.

Around 200 civilians are said to be holding out in the plant's bunkers, where the remaining Ukrainian fighters are holed up.

More than 150 people were rescued from Azovstal last weekend.

However, further attempts at evacuations from the city on the Azov Sea failed.
