For a long time, the conservatives in the Union smiled at Daniel Günther.

On Sunday he could give the CDU the tailwind that is urgently needed before the NRW elections.

Munich – It is 695 kilometers as the crow flies from Munich to Kiel.

And for a long time, that was roughly the substantive distance between Schleswig-Holstein Prime Minister Daniel Günther (CDU) and the CSU leaders in the Bavarian state capital.

They made no secret of their mutual dislike.

CSU regional group leader Alexander Dobrindt publicly mocked the liberal Northern Lights as "Comrade Günther".

He in turn cheered openly when the CSU suffered heavy losses in the 2018 state elections.

"First you have to manage that, to get from 47 percent, to be able to set up a one-man government that also works very successfully - and then to crash like that," blasphemed the Merkel and Laschet friend.

"The CSU's brutal way of doing politics may have been appreciated by voters in Bavaria 30 years ago, but today that's no longer enough."

On Sunday they are also looking a little devoutly in the direction of Kiel in the CSU.

In the Schleswig-Holstein elections, Günther of all people should end the Union's severe series of defeats in elections.

According to Infratest dimap, 74 percent of the 2.3 million eligible voters are satisfied with his work.

Polls therefore see a big plus for the CDU after the 32 percent last time – it could be 38.

The SPD, on the other hand, threatens to fall from 27.3 to around 19 percent – roughly in the area of the Greens.

The red “Scholz train”, which recently gave Anke Rehlinger an unexpected absolute majority in Saarland, threatens to come to a standstill shortly before the NRW elections.

A bit strange: Ironically, the conservative Friedrich Merz now has to hope for support from the liberal Günther.

The crushing defeat of Tobias Hans in Saarland was the first test for the new CDU boss.

A week later, however, NRW will be really decisive – the most populous state, also home to Merz.

There, Hendrik Wüst, the successor to the hapless Armin Laschet, presented himself to the voters for the first time.

Everything points to a head-to-head race with SPD challenger Thomas Kuschaty.

The nervousness in the Union is great.

Election in Schleswig-Holstein: Daniel Günther prefers a calm style that has a more long-term effect

Daniel Günther is all the more relaxed in the final sprint.

The fact that he fell ill with Corona in the hot phase of all times did not harm his election campaign.

In any case, he prefers a calm style that tends to have a long-term effect.

He is "by nature reserved and not the world explainer," says the 48-year-old.

In retrospect, his broadsides against the CSU seem all the harder.

Günther has governed together with the Greens and FDP since 2017 – and wants to continue the three-way alliance even if it is enough after the election for black and yellow.

"I want to be reliable there," he said in an interview from the quarantine.

Especially with a view to the Greens, he takes stock of Jamaica: "We have learned a lot from each other." Above all, about the connection between economy and ecology.

The conservatives in the Union will soon have to nibble on Günther again.

After Sunday then.
