The death toll from the explosion that took place at the Saratoga Hotel in the center of the Cuban capital, Havana, has risen to 22, including a child.
A previous toll indicated that 8 people were killed and 30 others were wounded in the explosion.
The Cuban presidential administration said in a statement today that 64 injured people, including 14 children, were hospitalized.
The Cuban Prensa Latina Agency reported yesterday that the explosion was caused by a gas leak, according to preliminary investigations, noting that search and rescue work for missing persons under the rubble was continuing after the explosion destroyed the facade of the five-storey hotel.
Cuban President Miguel Diaz-Canel inspected the scene of the explosion and the ambulance and rescue work, as well as visited the wounded in one of the hospitals to which they were taken.
The Saratoga Hotel is one of the distinctive facilities in the Cuban tourism industry that recently hosted the World Tourism Fair 2022 and is located in the historic center of the capital, which is visited by thousands daily.
