Emanuel Macron said today (Saturday) that his re-election marks a "basic democratic renaissance" as he is sworn in for a second term as president of France at a ceremony at the Elysee Palace.
Macron, who defeated far-right candidate Marine Lehfen in the second round of the presidential election two weeks ago, entered the palace to the sound of Handel played by the Republican Guard's string quartet.
"From the war in Europe to the plague and the climate crisis, our country has rarely faced such a combination of challenges. The French people have chosen a clear project for the future, a European project of scientific and social progress and independence," he told the 500 guests in the inauguration speech.
"France is showing its best side in the most difficult times. At this moment, as the century changes, we must map the road, and show the way forward together," Macron said.
"Let us muster the courage to face a present reality. Let us be true to the values of freedom, equality, fraternity and secularism. Let us continue to love the republic and all that it represents. Let us love our country."

Macron also insisted that his second priesthood would not be a continuation of the first priesthood.
He pledged to "act" to produce a "more comprehensive" education system, and "health care accessible to all," as well as greater sexual equality and a stronger military.
"I have one goal and that is to serve, to serve our country, to serve my colleagues with a sense of responsibility, to serve our children and young people," Macron said.

Macron then set out for the Elysee Gardens to honor the anthem, accompanied by 21 barrages of honor from the Invalide Palace complex.
Macron, 44, won the April 24 election with 58.55% of the vote.
