Gas phase-out: Can Austria learn from Germany? [Podcast »Inside Austria«]

2022-05-07T16:36:59.973Z

Two months after the start of the war, Austria is still heavily dependent on Russian gas. Germany, on the other hand, was able to reduce its imports by 20 percent. A role model for the government in Vienna?

Like many other European countries, Austria has declared that it wants to end its dependence on Russian gas.

But apart from declarations of intent and a trip by the Federal Chancellor and the Energy Minister to Qatar and the United Arab Emirates, which attracted media attention, the government in Vienna has so far not been able to report any successes.

Austria still gets 80 percent of its gas imports from Russia.

The Greens are also part of the government in the Alpine republic and have made the gas phase-out issue their flag.

But instead of concrete strategies, Green Energy Minister Leonore Gewessler is currently warning of supply bottlenecks and the economic consequences of a gas embargo.

Why doesn't the party manage to take a leading role in the gas phase-out?

A look at Germany shows: Here the Greens have managed to make the issue a top priority.

According to Green Economics Minister Robert Habeck, the share of Russian gas deliveries in Germany has already been reduced from 55 percent to 35 percent.

And the communication from the Economics Minister also seems to be going down well with many at the moment.

Green strategies in Germany

In this episode of »Inside Austria«, we look at how Austria and Germany are trying to get off Russian gas.

We ask why the Greens in Austria aren't addressing the issue more and whether they can learn something from the strategies of their German sister party.

In the weekly podcast “Inside Austria”, SPIEGEL and “Standard” look together at the big and small scandals in Austria.

Together with journalists from both editorial offices, we reconstruct cases and events that move the country.

We look into political abysses, follow the investigations into the cause of Sebastian Kurz and his ÖVP.
