Opinion | Shabbat of the residents of Elad: My home is no longer a fortress Israel today

2022-05-07T21:37:04.782Z

We did the Shabbat prayers in the synagogues when worshipers carrying pistols were stationed near the doors, ready for any scenario that might happen, and the fear in the air

The attack in Elad took place under my house.

At the time of the attack we were not at home, and thus we were spared the horrifying sounds and harsh and stressful spectacles seen here during the hours of this long and painful evening.

It was only late at night that we mustered up the courage to return home.

I left the family in a motor vehicle under the house, and called the police to scan my house and make sure the terrorists were not hiding in it.

Only then did we enter the house, and hurried to close the shutters and lock the doors tightly.

As a regular ritual, everyone was waiting for the bad news - when the number of murdered would become names of people and shattered families, only this time it is our neighbors - acquaintances who will disappear forever from the city's human landscape, and the soft voices of their orphans say Kaddish will be heard over the coming year.

Since the attack, the sounds of helicopters have been sawing the skies of the city of Elad.

The incident did not end, and the residents shut themselves in the house and avoided leaving it as much as possible.

It is very reminiscent of the days of terrorist attacks in the 1990s, when no one knew where the next attack would take place and who its victims would be.

We did the Shabbat prayers in the synagogues when worshipers carrying pistols were stationed near the doors, ready for any scenario that might happen, and the fear in the air.

And even in this situation we were already in the early 2000s.

People rush to finish the prayer and return home, and the city streets are most of the time empty of people.

Only security personnel continue to patrol and search for the terrorists.

It is very difficult for the residents here with the situation that has arisen: how did we degenerate into a relatively peaceful routine of life within a few weeks, in which an attack could occur at any moment and in any place and no one feels more secure ?!

How is it that in a reformed state residents cannot walk safely through the city streets and children to educational institutions ?!

We must not go back to those dark days!

The trust in the security of the citizens must return the security to the residents of the country at all costs.

Were we wrong?

Fixed!
