Markus Söder amazes with his appointment of Martin Huber as the new Secretary General.
Huber faces a Herculean task, comments Mike Schier.
It is, as much can be said, a courageous decision by Markus Söder: Hardly anyone had Martin Huber on their list as Secretary General.
The member of the state parliament, who has so far tended to act away from the limelight, is now faced with the Herculean task of preventing the CSU from falling to the next historically poor election result by autumn 2023.
In these unpredictable times, in which foreign and Russia policy in particular characterize the political debate (neither of which are glorious pages for the party), he has to craft a Bavarian strategy as Markus Söder's right-hand man.
The personnel Huber shows how great Söder estimates the need for peace within the party
So far, Söder's corona policy and his failed trip to Berlin have had an overwhelming effect.
The CSU boss is trying to reinvent himself as the father of the country - but repair work alone is not enough to reconvince voters.
In 2018 they won, not least thanks to generous election gifts.
In 2023 that will be eliminated.
Inflation, energy worries and supply problems threaten Bavaria's prosperity.
The new arts minister had to bury the Munich concert hall, and the new transport minister has indicated that not every plan will come true.
And the finance minister is fighting for his budget, which has long been the pride of all state governments since Edmund Stoiber.
Conceivably bad conditions for a promising program.
The personnel Huber shows how great Söder estimates the need for peace within the party.
Close the ranks, get the base on board, bind the faction to the party leader.
Huber will be the party worker, Söder will remain the star.
The 2023 state election will therefore primarily be a vote on the CSU leader.
