Mother's Day is a celebration that is present in much of the world, but the day on which it takes place varies according to the traditions and history of each country.
The first official celebrations
Although the first celebrations of Mother's Day date back to ancient Greece with the celebrations in honor of Rhea, the mother of the Gods.
The contemporary origin of this celebration is from the activist Julia Ward Howe who in 1872 suggested the creation of Mother's Day as a way to unite women and advocate for peace.
In the case of Mesoamerica, the Mayans worshiped Ixchel, goddess of the moon, love, fertility and pregnancy, and the Mexica worshiped Tonatzin —a term used to designate different female deities— who was "the mother of everything that exists".
In the Aztec culture, where a divinity could have different names, Coatlicue, goddess of fertility, also received the name of Tonatzin.
However, the official recognition of Mother's Day was achieved thanks to Anna Jarvis, as it was she who held the first Mother's Day in honor of her own mother, Ann Reeves Jarvis, a woman who dedicated much of her life to working with various women's organizations promoting health and social security issues.
Mother's Day: how the woman who invented the holiday came to hate it
After the death of his mother in 1905, Jarvis made a small tribute to his mother on May 12, 1907 at the Andrews Methodist Episcopal Church located in the city of Grafton, West Virginia in the United States.
A year later, Jarvis campaigned for the holiday to be recognized.
However, it wasn't until 1914 that then-US President Woodrow Wilson signed a bill to recognize Jarvis Mother's Day as a national holiday.
