A drug trafficking syndicate used private cars as temporary drug storage warehouses. The Police New Territories North Regional Public Events Investigation Team conducted an anti-drug operation in Yuen Long yesterday (6th) and arrested a 49-year-old man for "trafficking dangerous drugs". About 111 kilograms of suspected cannabis flowers and drug paraphernalia were seized, with a market value of about $23 million.

Li Wenhan, Chief Inspector of the Public Activities Investigation Team of the New Territories North Region, said that after in-depth investigation and intelligence collection, it was discovered that a drug trafficking syndicate active in the New Territories mainly selling cannabis used vehicles as temporary drug storage warehouses. A private car parked in the car park of Long Ping Estate was locked and an ambush operation was carried out immediately.

At about 5 pm yesterday (6th), detectives found a man opened the door of the private car, and then touched suspected drugs in the car, and immediately stepped forward to intercept it.

Police seized vehicle keys, a mobile phone and $8,000 in cash from the man.

Later, 8 nylon bags and 2 plastic bags were found in the private car, and a large amount of suspected marijuana flowers and a batch of drug paraphernalia were found in them. The man was arrested on suspicion of "trafficking dangerous drugs".

After the police count, the suspected marijuana flowers seized weighed 111 kilograms and had a market value of about 23 million yuan. The arrested 49-year-old man surnamed Mai was borrowed from China and reported that he was a construction worker. He is being detained for investigation.

Police believe he belonged to a key member of a drug cartel and was about to take the drugs out of the car for sale.

The police will investigate the source of the drugs and the syndicate's previous activities, and more arrests cannot be ruled out.

Chief Inspector Law Lai-him of the same group continued to point out that in recent years, he has noticed that some criminals are trying to downplay the harm of marijuana, and even beautify its functions, causing young people to fall into the law by mistake.

According to the Dangerous Drugs Ordinance, Chapter 134 of the Laws of Hong Kong, anyone who traffics a dangerous drug (trafficking is the sale or supply of a dangerous drug to another person) is liable to a maximum fine of $5 million and life imprisonment upon conviction.

The police appeal to the public not to try the law by themselves.

Chief Inspector Law Lai-him of the Public Events Investigation Team of the New Territories North Region of the Police and Senior Inspector Li Wenhan, Head of the Public Events Investigation Team of the Police, gave a media briefing on the case.
