A very special chick hatched in Olching.

"Netto" comes from a supermarket egg.

The fact that the chick is allowed to live is due to a great coincidence.

Olching – Actually, this mini chicken shouldn't even exist.

But "Netto" lives his young life to the fullest, frolics around with his siblings and explores his surroundings.

"Netto" owes its existence to Olching's "bird papa" Gerhard Wendl.

Chick hatches from "Supermarket Egg: "Netto" hatched by chance

He always welcomes children from the Gröbenzell family base to his bird rescue station in Olching.

To show them what chicken chicks look like, Wendl resorted to a ruse.

He chose dwarf cochin hen Eulalia to provide offspring.

So that their eggs don't break until Eulalia has taken up their final brood position, Wendl exchanged them for eggs from the discounter.

(By the way: everything from the region is now also available in our regular FFB newsletter.)

Chicken lady Eulalia incubates supermarket egg - and chick "Netto" actually hatches

When it was clear that Eulalia was ready for the brood, Wendl put her own eggs under the chicken lady again – and took those from the supermarket out of the nest.

But he must have overlooked one thing.

And this must have been fertilized.

Eight chicks hatched from seven of their own eggs and one from someone else.

The papa bird found the final proof when Eulalia left her nest and a broken shell with a stamp appeared.

In addition, chick net looks different than his siblings.

Unlike the dwarf Cochin hens, also known as rolling shuttlecocks, Netto comes along as a regular layer breed.

The chick got its name from the discounter Netto, where it was sold as an egg.

It was the big draw for Netto.

Now it can enjoy the rest of its life on Wendl's site - and act as an ambassador of its kind.
