The 12-car MTR train, commonly known as "Black Twilight", will be opened to traffic on the 15th of this month as the cross-sea section of the East Rail Line will be officially retired after the last train is completed the day before yesterday (6th). The 2019 "Black Twiggy" train has its own unique characteristics. It is suggested that the relevant train sets should be displayed in the Tai Po Railway Museum or the LCSD venue for permanent exhibition. It is also considering the feasibility of donating the "Wu Teenage" train to community partners for educational programs, but it has not yet been finalized.

The front of the car was refurbished from "yellow head" to "black head" in the 1990s

The MLR passenger train set, commonly known as "Blackhead", is a Mid-Life Refurbished Train produced in the UK. This series of trains was refurbished in the mid-1990s, and the front of the train was refurbished from "Yellow Head" to "Blackhead". After the successful transition from the Kowloon-Canton Railway to the merger of the two railways, it continued to run on the East Rail Line until it reached its service life of nearly 40 years. After completing its mission on the East Rail Line last Friday, all retired.

Chairman Mao Jiajun of Tai Po District Council said that he was informed that MTR intends to launch a pilot project to donate the entire E44 train to educational groups or other institutions for conservation purposes. The original site of the station was rebuilt, witnessing the changes of Tai Po Market. The railway is also closely related to the development of Tai Po District. Therefore, it is suggested that the MTR would transfer the current “Wu Teng Tau” East Rail Line trains, together with the trains currently stored in the Ho Tung House Depot in Fo Tan. A three-car E44 imperial train and a G16 diesel-electric locomotive commonly known as "Chaitou" are displayed in the Railway Museum for a permanent exhibition.

He also pointed out that due to the limited area of the museum, it may not be possible to display all of them. He suggested that he could consider imitating the current practice of placing the fireboat Grantham in Quarry Bay Park, and placing it in the LCSD venues in the district, such as Tai Po Waterfront Park. , improve parks and other places, so that citizens can remember the past and retain precious collective memories.

The proposal, supported by District Councillor Liu Yongwei and District Zhenhao, will be discussed further at the District Facility Management, Culture, Recreation and Sports Committee of the Tai Po District Council on Friday (13th).

In response, the MTR has been committed to promoting environmental protection and sustainable community development, and actively researching methods for disposing of decommissioned trains, including recycling individual components to make the best use of them.

MTR: exploring the feasibility of different options

To coincide with the opening of the cross-sea section of the East Rail Line, MTR is gradually replacing mid-term refurbished trains that have been in service for nearly 40 years with new trains, and the existing mid-term refurbished trains will be fully retired.

MTR will properly dispose of the decommissioned trains of the East Rail Line through the qualified contractors entrusted by open tenders, including dismantling the recyclable components of the trains in accordance with the relevant laws and guidelines of the Environmental Protection Department. The contractors must also ensure that the processing process will not pollute the environment .

MTR is also exploring the feasibility of different schemes, such as donating train parts to community partners for education and other purposes through the "Retired Train Conservation Pilot Scheme".

At present, the MTR and the Hong Kong Railway Museum are actively discussing a feasible plan for donating individual old diesel locomotives, but not including the "Twiggy" trains. The relevant arrangements will be announced in due course.

The passenger train of No. E44 has been stored in the Hedonglou Depot, and there are no other arrangements for the time being.

The Hong Kong Railway Museum is located in the center of Tai Po Market, with an area of 6,500 square meters. It is an outdoor museum converted from the original site of the old Tai Po Market Railway Station. The current exhibits include the No. 51 diesel electric locomotive Sir Grantham, narrow gauge steam locomotives , as well as the century-old steam train card No. 313.

Over 2,929 units will be rebuilt in two phases at Yue Kwong Village. The first phase of the three buildings will be completed in 2031.
