EL PAÍS America expands its presence.

The American continent, which already accounts for almost half of the newspaper's audience, has historically represented one of the newspaper's main informative axes and, for a decade, has had its own edition, to which the one from Mexico was added in 2020.

Now, in a year of high political and social tension in the area, EL PAÍS América takes a new step and reinforces its coverage with a newsroom in Bogotá, which will support the entire South American area.

This progress will be accompanied by a strengthening of the correspondents in Buenos Aires, São Paulo and Santiago de Chile, as well as an edition in English aimed at the United States.

With more than 40 million readers, EL PAÍS America has become a benchmark in the defense of democratic values in an area where threats to the press and the deterioration of freedom of expression are increasing.

To cement this position, EL PAÍS América is going to redouble its efforts in investigating major corruption cases and denouncing political, gender and racial abuse.

Likewise, it will broaden the plurality of its opinions with the great American voices of culture, politics, thought and economics, which already include the Nobel Prize winners Paul Krugman and Mario Vargas Llosa and intellectuals and writers such as Juan Gabriel Vásquez, Martín Caparrós , Leila Guerriero, Eliane Brum or Sergio Ramírez.

“Since its foundation, EL PAÍS has had a clear American vocation.

Now, we are going one step further to offer our Latin American readers all the global nature of the newspaper, but also our own look at the most relevant events in each country on the continent, with journalists on the ground and a network of reporters and analysts without comparison. the great reference world media”, explains Pepa Bueno, director of EL PAÍS.

The plan to strengthen the edition of America has one of its strong points in Bogotá.

A team of experienced Colombian journalists has been added to the team of professionals that was already reporting on the Andean area, with the aim of deepening coverage not only in the country but throughout the region in a particularly turbulent year, with presidential elections in Colombia and Brazil. and great challenges in Chile, Argentina, Peru and Venezuela.

It will also develop new narratives,

podcast

and

newsletters

, and will have the support of the radio media of the PRISA Group (W-Radio and Caracol) and firms such as Juan Gabriel Vásquez, Ricardo Silva, Diana Calderón, who will present a political video analysis, Yolanda Ruiz or María Jimena Duzán.

This momentum in Colombia comes a few weeks before the presidential elections, a challenge to which EL PAÍS América will turn its best resources.

Since its creation, the American edition has been distinguished by its independence and rigor.

Following the

Book of Style

, which is mandatory for its journalists and which guarantees the autonomy of the Newsroom, and supported by major investigations, such as the

Pandora Papers,

and high-quality reports, it has not only garnered numerous international awards, but has seen its continental audience steadily increase.

“EL PAÍS America has the nationality of its readers.

An open, plural and interested audience in the great keys of today.

We address them, beyond borders, with precise information, extensive research and the best firms on the continent.

In the face of threats to freedom of expression and the deterioration of freedoms, our weapons are good journalism and the defense of democratic values.

Independence and contrast are part of our genetics”, says the director of EL PAÍS América, Jan Martínez Ahrens.

From its continental vocation, the newspaper has also decided to deepen its successful penetration in the United States.

In addition to the information in Spanish that it offers in its American edition, EL PAÍS is going to expand its content in English with an edition aimed at the American public and which, under the supervision of its experienced team of translators, will draw on high-quality information. quality generated by the newspaper and the Washington bureau.

In this general effort to grow and improve articles of interest to the American public, the Mexican edition, with almost 12 million readers, will continue to provide strategic support to the project, with special emphasis on audiovisual and network developments, as well as on monitoring the Latin American universe.
