On Sunday (May 8th) the state parliament of Schleswig-Holstein will be elected.

The CDU is currently the clear leader in polls.

What are the chances of the current Jamaican coalition continuing to govern?

Kiel – A so-called Jamaica coalition of CDU, Greens and FDP has governed Schleswig-Holstein for five years under Prime Minister Daniel Günther (CDU).

The CDU won the 2017 state election, having previously been the opposition party.

But she achieved a clear victory with more than five percentage points ahead of the SPD, which had previously governed with the Greens and the South Schleswig Voters' Association (SSW).

The next state elections in Schleswig-Holstein are scheduled for Sunday, May 8th.

The results of the 2022 state election will be published live from 6 p.m. on election Sunday, including on the website of the Statistical Office for Hamburg and Schleswig-Holstein.

Intermediate results on voter participation can also be viewed there on election Sunday at 11 a.m., 2 p.m. and 5 p.m.

The current developments in the election in Schleswig-Holstein can be read in the election ticker.

Election in Schleswig-Holstein: The top candidates in the 2022 state elections

In addition to the two leading parties CDU and SPD, the Greens, FDP, AfD and the small party Südschleswigscher Wahlerverband (SSW) are currently sitting in the state parliament.

For the CDU, Prime Minister Daniel Günther is now the top candidate, while the SPD is backing Thomas Losse-Müller, the former head of the Kiel State Chancellery.

The Greens are led by a dual leadership of State Finance Minister Monika Heinold and State Parliament Vice President Aminata Touré.

Heinold, Losse-Müller and Günther were recently able to follow the voters in a TV trill.

The forecasts and projections for the state elections in Schleswig-Holstein can be found in this ticker.

The FDP has made its state economics minister, Bernd Buchholz, the top candidate.

The SSW regional party has nominated its parliamentary group leader Lars Harms and the Afd election campaign is being conducted by Jörg Nobis, a member of the state parliament.

Surveys suggest that the 2022 state elections in Schleswig-Holstein will probably offer continuity

The latest polls unanimously point to a clear victory for the CDU.

In the surveys, the party comes to 36 to 38 percent, according to the AFP news agency.

The SPD was 19 to 20 percent, so it only achieved around half the votes of the CDU.

The Greens reach 16 to 17 percent, the FDP comes to seven to nine percent.

The AfD is in the polls at five to six percent, the SSW, which as a minority party is already exempt from the five percent hurdle, comes to five percent, reports the AFP.

The left would miss the entry into the state parliament again.

The survey also shows a high level of satisfaction with the work of the state government and with Prime Minister Günther.

Forecasts for the 2022 state election: Strong polls for the CDU make a two-party alliance seem possible

The mandate to form a government will therefore lie with Günther and the CDU with a relatively high probability.

In contrast to 2017, according to the current survey results, the CDU may even have the option of continuing to govern with only one partner.

An alliance of the CDU and the Greens is conceivable.

The results could possibly also be enough for a two-party alliance with the FDP.

A coalition of CDU and SPD would also be mathematically possible, but according to AFP this pairing is considered unlikely.

According to the polls, a government led by the SPD would only be possible if the Social Democrats, from the position of the second-strongest party, were to initiate a four-party alliance with the Greens, FDP and SSW.

Victory for Günther in Schleswig-Holstein and thus a boost for the CDU after a bad Saarland result?

For the CDU in particular, the election also represents an important opportunity to regain strength overall – nationwide, especially since elections will take place just a week later in the most populous federal state of North Rhine-Westphalia.

After the defeat in the federal elections last autumn and the subsequent loss of members, it was a new setback for the party that it clearly lost the first state election of the year in Saarland and had to cede power there to the SPD.

A victory by Günther in Schleswig-Holstein would give the CDU and its federal leader Friedrich Merz a boost.

It cannot be ruled out that a discussion about Günther's assignment to a higher federal political office will begin, according to the AFP news agency.

Günther has so far avoided allusions to this and emphasized that he would prefer to continue the three-way alliance with the Greens and the FDP.
