In the state elections in Schleswig-Holstein, fewer voters went to the polls until the early afternoon on Sunday than five years ago.

By 2:00 p.m., 36.8 percent had cast their votes in the polling stations, as the state returning officer announced on his website.

In 2017, 42.5 percent had done so at this point.

Kiel - The turnout at the time was 64.2 percent.

According to earlier information, the deputy state returning officer, Maik Petersen, assumed that there would be a lively participation in the postal vote.

In 2017, the proportion of postal votes was 18 percent.

Around 2.317 million Schleswig-Holsteiners are allowed to vote in the state elections.

There are 16 parties with state lists to choose from, three more than five years ago.

The first forecasts and projections are expected in the evening shortly after the polling stations close.

Schleswig-Holstein: Top candidates vote

According to the latest polls, the CDU has a clear lead.

The Union came to 36 to 38 percent.

Pollsters determined 19 to 20 percent for the SPD and 16 to 17 percent for the Greens.

They are followed by the FDP with 7 to 9 percent, the AfD with 5 to 6 percent and the SSW, which as the party of the Danish minority is exempt from the 5 percent hurdle, with 4 to 5 percent.
