There are still around 50 days until the G7 summit at Schloss Elmau.

At an information evening, the police and politicians asserted that there should be as few restrictions as possible for locals.

Garmisch-Partenkirchen – From June 26th to 28th, the Werdenfelser Land will be in the spotlight of the world public: that is when the heads of state and government of the seven most powerful western industrialized nations will meet again after 2015 at Schloss Elmau.

For the holiday region, this means a state of emergency.

It turns into a high security zone for a short time.

Garmisch-Partenkirchen in particular will feel the effects.

Larger demonstrations and rallies by opponents of the summit are expected in the district.

And this is where the security apparatus pitches its tents.

The preparations cannot be overlooked.

This includes the container settlement for the police and justice center in the Olympic ski stadium.

Or the sealed off congress center in which the federal police are housed.

Those responsible, above all Bavaria's Interior Minister Joachim Herrmann (CSU), were now at an information event trying to reduce fears and insecurities in the population.

The message was unmistakable: "We'll get it right this time, too," emphasized Herrmann.

Interest in the high-calibre evening – even government spokesman Steffen Hebestreit had traveled from Berlin – was limited, as was the case in Krün.

Almost 200 visitors were counted in the Bayernhalle, the majority of whom were official representatives of local politics, business and blue light organizations.

The "normal" citizens were clearly in the minority.

In the final question and answer session, there were just five comments – not much for a community of 29,000 people.

The focus was on the fear that shops, house walls or meadows could be affected.

Herrmann gave the all-clear in this regard: "Should, despite all the precautions, there be direct damage caused by the summit, nobody will be left with their losses." The federal and state governments are responsible for this.

A special insurance should be taken out.

"We will be well prepared to ensure a peaceful and safe summit meeting," emphasized the minister - and announced a "high police presence".

In 2015, around 18,000 officers were deployed at the peak.

A comparable magnitude is expected this year, with the Federal Police alone making 7,000 available.

G7 summit 2022 in Elmau: Police stress - "Keep restrictions as low as possible"

"We will keep the restrictions as low as possible," announced Manfred Hauser, police chief for Upper Bavaria South.

Not only locals hope for this, but also the many commuters, craftsmen and suppliers who depend on functioning traffic flows.

Remarkable: Apart from two four-hour time windows on the arrival and departure days of the prominent guests (June 26 and 28), there should be no major closures on the protocol route.

"Otherwise you will be able to reach everything normally," said Hauser to the audience.

However, drivers must be prepared for controls.

The police want to try to divert traffic over a wide area and pull out potential rioters early.

Franz Xaver Vogl, Vice President of the Federal Police Headquarters in Munich, provided an initial, somewhat more concrete assessment of the expected protests.

Accordingly, the authorities expect less G7 opponents from the left-wing extremist camp, but rather a large number of climate protectionists from the Fridays for Future movement.

Lateral thinkers as well as pro-Russian and pro-Ukrainian supporters – which harbors a high risk of conflict – could also use the forum.

Herrmann is certain: “Peaceful demonstrators are welcome in Bavaria.

That's part of our democracy.” Violent troublemakers, on the other hand, are not welcome.
