Some corona patients suffer from long-term consequences after the illness.

Forgetfulness is also a long-Covid symptom.

A doctor explains what helps against it.

Munich – Anyone who is infected with the corona virus can show symptoms during the illness.

If these occur, they vary in severity depending on the patient.

As soon as the corona infection has been overcome, the majority of those who were previously ill can live without symptoms again.

But there are also numerous cases in which corona patients suffer from Long-Covid.

According to the Robert Koch Institute (RKI), this means long-term health consequences associated with a previous corona infection.

There is still no reliable data on the frequency of such long-Covid cases.

Long Covid

According to the definition of the British National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE),

Long Covid

refers to health problems that persist or recur at least four weeks after the acute phase of the disease.

According to the RKI, the numbers from various studies vary: Depending on the survey, between 7.5 percent and 41 percent of long-Covid cases were registered among people with corona who did not have to be treated in hospital.

The value for inpatient Covid 19 patients was 37.6 percent.

Long Covid: According to expert Jördis Frommhold, the “classic” of the long-term consequences of corona is forgetfulness

One thing is clear: Some patients previously infected with Corona still feel the consequences weeks or even months after their illness.

In Germany, Dr.

Jördis Frommhold as an expert on Long-Covid.

She counts "cognitive limitations" among the most common long-Covid symptoms.

"This is the classic," said the chief physician of the department for respiratory diseases and allergies at the Median Clinic in Heiligendamm to Focus.de.

Frommhold described the everyday problems of the people affected.

"I have to write everything down.

I'm going to the supermarket and I don't even know what I wanted to buy.

I always leave the key in the car or I get on my bike and don't even know where I actually want to go.

All of this is a very typical long-Covid-syndrome.”

Long-Covid-Symptom "Brainfog" - Doctor advises "brain performance training" via app or game form

"Frequently, forgetfulness increases, the much-mentioned 'brainfog', i.e. the fog in the head," the doctor continued.

This happens all the more frequently, "the more the patient is burdened," said Frommhold.

But she also gave those affected hope that these complaints can be counteracted.

"We can work with brain power training," explained the Long Covid expert.

This can also be done via smartphone, various apps would already be available.

Likewise, "very classic things, crossword puzzles, Sudoku, memory" are ideal for training your brain in a playful way.

People who are struggling with long-term forgetfulness as a result of corona disease can also help themselves with small cheat sheets and notes.

However, there is a significant limitation for all those affected: "There is not one drug or miracle pill that you then take and then it's gone again." Health Minister Karl Lauterbach also recently warned of the effects of Long Covid.
