Opinion | The Ramadan pogrom and Hamas weakness Israel today

2022-05-08T04:43:33.674Z

Although Hamas is trying to ride the waves of violence and build from them, it is not the one behind them, nor does it control the height and intensity of the waves.

The events of the past month were summed up by us in the unfortunate statement that "Ramadan passed relatively quietly," and now all that remains is to hope for silence on "Nakba Day" on May 15, when the Palestinians "mark" the establishment of the State of Israel, and on "Asset Day." , In which they "mark" the Arab defeat in the Six Day War.

This statement is to be regretted, not only because 19 Israelis were killed in a series of terrorist attacks across the country, but also because it replicates the Eastern European shtetl mentality, in which Jewish life was conducted in the shadow of the fear of the holidays of their gentile neighbors. Lest they decide to "mark them" by a pogrom against the Jews.

Another statement that is often made here is that the round of confrontation over the past month between Israel and the Palestinians, as well as those that preceded it, has strengthened Hamas, and even made it a leading force in the Palestinian arena.

He wants to set fire to the Gaza border and Judea and Samaria, in Jerusalem and even among Israeli Arabs, and he wants - depending on his interests and concessions on the part of Israel - to lower the flames, and even work to calm the winds until the next flare.

But the reality on the ground does not support such statements and claims.

Although Hamas is trying to ride the waves of violence and build from them, it is not the one behind them, nor does it control the height and intensity of the waves.

The Palestinian street does not belong to Hamas, and certainly not to the Palestinian Authority.

The Palestinian arena, as well as the Arabs of Israel, are characterized by a lack of leadership, a lack of path and an internal reality of chaos.

There was no organization behind the terrorist attacks, and the riots on the Temple Mount also resulted in several dozen or hundreds of rioters, who failed to sweep away the Palestinian public - most of whom remained on the sidelines.

After all, every Palestinian understands and knows that Hamas' path is a dead end leading to doom, and it is enough to look at Gaza to understand it.

Although Hamas controls the Gaza Strip by force of arms and fighters, the situation of the population in the Gaza Strip has never been worse, and there is no chance that it will improve in the foreseeable future.

Hamas is trying to stir up winds in Judea and Samaria and among Israeli Arabs, because it fears a direct confrontation on the Gaza border, the price of which will be paid by the Hamas state in the Gaza Strip. This conduct of Hamas allows him to lead a routine of life in Gaza, while at the same time heating up other areas of conflict.

Yahya Sinwar's attack on Mansour Abbas, dubbed a "traitor" by him, is proof of Sinwar and his associates 'fear that Abbas' path, a path of integration into the State of Israel, enjoys support among Israeli Arabs, and despite incessant terrorist attacks, many Palestinians They also choose Israeli citizenship, if it was in their hands.

This reality is the great victory of Israel, which last week celebrated 74 years since its establishment, over Palestinian nationalism.

But this is not the time for celebrations, as the chaotic reality in the Palestinian arena poses a security challenge in the form of waves of terrorism, and this requires an active policy, not just maintaining the status quo and waiting until the next calendar day, and the waves of attacks it brings.
