Update from May 8, 1:11 p.m .:

Several top candidates have already cast their votes in the state elections in Schleswig-Holstein.

So does the incumbent Prime Minister Daniel Günther from the CDU.

When voting in the election office of Stadtwerke Eckernförde, the politician was optimistic.

"I would be happy if the polls were confirmed and the CDU became by far the strongest force, because I would very much like to continue this government," he said after the election.

Current surveys put the CDU at 38 percent well ahead of the SPD (18 percent).

Daniel Günther is therefore considered the likely winner even before the end of the election.

Kiel – On May 8, 2022, people in Schleswig-Holstein will elect a new state parliament.

In addition, many major parties are running with top candidates.

The SPD wants to make Thomas Losse-Möller prime minister.

Monika Heinold is running for the Greens.

Bernd Buchholz is at the head of the FDP.

Jörg Nobis (AfD), Susanne Spethmann (Linke) and Bernd Buchholz (SSW) complete the field of candidates from the established parties.

They all want to oust CDU candidate Daniel Günter from the post of prime minister.

In polls, however, this looks like the clear winner of the state elections.

First statements on the turnout can be expected in the course of Sunday.

Schleswig-Holstein state election: CDU candidate Günther looks like the clear winner before the election

According to an Insa survey from May 3, 2022, the CDU is clearly in the lead with 36 percent before the SH state elections.

Daniel Günther therefore already looks like the clear winner of the election in advance.

The SPD came in second with 20 percent.

The Greens would be the third strongest force with 16 percent, ahead of the FDP (nine percent) and AfD (six percent).

Five percent of those surveyed spoke out in favor of the SSW.

According to the Insa survey, the left (three percent) missed entering the state parliament.

On May 8, 2022, the voters will decide whether the CDU can really celebrate as the winner of the election or whether the SPD will succeed in forming a majority against the votes of the Union.

Anyone who wants to have a say must have German citizenship, be at least 16 years old on election day and have lived in Schleswig-Holstein for at least six weeks.

Those who meet the conditions can vote by post or go to the polling station on election Sunday between 8 a.m. and 6 p.m.

Schleswig-Holstein state election: When will the winner be chosen?

The first forecasts and projections for the outcome of the state elections in Schleswig-Holstein will be available on election Sunday from 6 p.m.

From this point on, it slowly becomes clear who will emerge victorious in the vote for political power in the northern German state.

However, meaningful results are only available late in the evening or early Monday morning (May 9, 2022).
