German Chancellor Olaf Scholz announced that his country would not allow decisions that would make NATO a party to the crisis between Russia and Ukraine.
"We will not take any decisions that will make NATO a participant in the war between Russia and Ukraine, and it is necessary that there should not be a world war, especially between nuclear powers," RIA Novosti news agency quoted Schulz as saying during a speech to his compatriots on the occasion of Germany's liberation from Nazism.
Schulz believed that his country would not respond to everything that was asked of it, based on the principle of not harming the German people.
The German chancellor had recently announced that his country was seeking to avoid a direct confrontation between NATO and Russia over Ukraine, stressing that the priority was to prevent the outbreak of a third world war.
