Update from May 8, 11:45 a.m .:

The two-vote system applies to the state elections in Schleswig-Holstein.

The 35 mandates from the constituencies are awarded with the first vote.

Whoever gets the most votes there is elected.

The second vote is for the state list of a party, which adds a regular 34 mandates.

If a party receives more direct mandates in the constituencies than it would be entitled to based on second votes, it retains these multiple seats.

The other parties receive compensation mandates according to their share.

The five percent hurdle applies.

However, as a party of the Danish minority, the South Schleswig Voters' Association (SSW) is exempt from the five percent clause.

Update from May 8, 10:15 a.m .:

Chancellor Olaf Scholz’s SPD is now threatened with defeat in the Schleswig-Holstein election after its victories in the federal elections and most recently in Saarland.

The CDU, on the other hand, is looking to Kiel with hope after its last election failure.

The result could be clear.

Party leader Friedrich Merz can currently use a success, also with a view to the important state elections in North Rhine-Westphalia in a week.

If Günther stays at the helm on the Förde, his weight in the Union should continue to grow.

First registration:

Kiel – On May 8th, elections will take place in Schleswig-Holstein.

Prime Minister Daniel Günther is currently still leading a Jamaica coalition made up of the CDU, Greens and FDP.

In 2017, the CDU won the state elections in Schleswig-Holstein from the opposition with a lead of a little more than five percentage points over the SPD, which had previously governed with the Greens and the South Schleswig Voters' Association (SSW) in Kiel.

The Greens as well as the FDP, AfD and SSW came into the state parliament with a considerable gap to the two leading parties.

The left failed at the five percent hurdle.

The AfD entered the Kiel parliament with the strength of a faction, but lost this status due to divisions.

Election results from Schleswig-Holstein 2022: Günther's CDU leads polls - clear outcome expected

In 2022, the CDU is entering the race with Prime Minister Günther as the top candidate, the SPD wants to convince the voters with the former head of the Kiel State Chancellery, Thomas Losse-Müller.

The Greens appear with a dual leadership of State Finance Minister Monika Heinold and State Parliament Vice President Aminata Touré, the FDP with their State Minister of Economics Bernd Buchholz.

The SSW relies on parliamentary group leader Lars Harms, the AfD election campaign is led by the member of parliament Jörg Nobis.

The most recent polls before the state elections in Schleswig-Holstein unanimously point to a clear victory for the CDU.

In the surveys, the party comes to 36 to 38 percent.

The SPD was 19 to 20 percent, so it only achieved around half the votes of the CDU.

The Greens reach 16 to 17 percent, the FDP comes to seven to nine percent.

Results of the Schleswig-Holstein state election 2022: First forecast expected at 6 p.m

The AfD is in the polls at five to six percent, the SSW, which as a minority party is already exempt from the five percent hurdle, comes to five percent.

The left would miss the entry into the state parliament again.

The survey also shows a high level of satisfaction with the work of the state government and with Prime Minister Günther.

A first forecast can be expected in Schleswig-Holstein at 6 p.m. on May 8th.

Analysts expect that continuity will continue to prevail in Kiel.

According to the polls, the mandate to form a government clearly rests with Günther and the CDU.

The Christian Democrats could even continue to govern with just one partner, unlike in 2017.

An alliance of CDU and Greens would have a secure majority.

According to a survey, it could possibly also be enough for a two-party alliance with the FDP.

A coalition of the CDU and SPD would also be mathematically possible, but that is considered an unlikely option.

According to the polls, a government led by the SPD would only be possible if the Social Democrats, from the position of the clearly inferior second strongest force, forged a four-way alliance with the Greens, FDP and SSW.

That only seems conceivable in theory.
