Waakirchen – Although no longer in existence, Waakirchen still has middle school status for the building that now houses the primary school.

Until now.

"There is no prospect of ever going back to middle school," said Mayor Norbert Kerkel at the most recent meeting of the municipal council.

The councilors present finally approved the renewed application by Holger Kraus, headmaster of the Waakirchner elementary school, to dissolve the inactive status "middle school" - but only with a heavy heart.

With nine yes and seven no votes, the decision was quite close.

The inactive status has occupied the municipal councils for a good ten years.

"We certainly had hope that the situation might change," admitted Mayor Kerkel.

However, the number of students has developed in the opposite direction.

In the meantime, the primary school on Glückaufstrasse has also been spatially oriented differently and is quite full.

The school building in Schaftlach is busy looking after the school children on site.

Rottach-Egern and Holzkirchen are now the school locations that are attended by most of the middle school students in Waakirchner.

In addition, the school authority is pushing for a decision, it said at the meeting.

During the discussion about what is now the third application by headmaster Holger Kraus to abolish the status "middle school", it became apparent that some municipal councils were reluctant to give up the inactive status.

"If you give up your status, you won't get it back that easily," said Thomas Thrainer (FWG), who still saw opportunities for an increase in the number of students and a middle school in Waakirchen in the future.

Caroline Marquardt (WIR) and Günther Jeske (FWG) also saw no rush to part with the status.

Rudi Reber (ABV), on the other hand, found the resolution good: "You just have to say goodbye to some things." Evi Obermüller (Greens) - herself a teacher - could only agree to the request from headmaster Holger Kraus.

From her experience, the tendency remains that middle school has fewer inflows.

In addition, the personnel situation is already tense.
