In the state elections in Schleswig-Holstein, about as many voters voted until the early evening on Sunday as they did five years ago.

By 5:00 p.m., 54.7 percent had cast their vote, as the state returning officer announced on his website.

In 2017, 54.9 percent had done so at this point.

Voter turnout was 64.2 percent in 2017, up from 60.2 percent in 2012.

Kiel - State Returning Officer Tilo von Riegen said on Sunday that the postal voter turnout was already "quota" included.

According to earlier information, the deputy state returning officer, Maik Petersen, assumed that there would be a lively participation in the postal vote.

In 2017, the proportion of postal votes was 18 percent.

Around 2.317 million Schleswig-Holsteiners are allowed to vote in the state elections.

There are 16 parties with state lists to choose from, three more than five years ago.

The first forecasts and projections are expected in the evening shortly after the polling stations close.

According to the latest polls before election day, the CDU has a clear lead.

The Union came to 36 to 38 percent.

Pollsters determined 19 to 20 percent for the SPD and 16 to 17 percent for the Greens.

They are followed by the FDP with 7 to 9 percent, the AfD with 5 to 6 percent and the SSW, which as the party of the Danish minority is exempt from the 5 percent hurdle, with 4 to 5 percent.
