About 130 diverse artworks carrying awareness messages about the importance of preserving the environment and its safety formed the content of the exhibition, which was opened today by the Second College of Fine Arts at the Damascus University branch in As-Suwayda under the title “Environment Friendly Art.”

The works that are the product of the “Art and Environment” workshop held by the college within the activities of last April, were embodied by the college students within their curricula in their various academic years and specializations (interior architecture, graphic design, multimedia, drawing, photography, graphics - printing, engraving and sculpture) using waste and combining the environment and nature in distinctive and innovative artistic ways.

In a statement to SANA reporter, Dr. Khaled Kiwan, director of the Damascus University branch in As-Suwayda spoke about the exhibition’s awareness-raising messages about the dangers of smoking and environmental pollution resulting from littering, and an indication of the ancient heritage, which contributes to linking theoretical reality and practical application for students, enriching their experiences and polishing their skills.

The Dean of the Second College of Arts in As-Suwayda, Dr. Ghassan Aboud, considered that the students’ use of discarded and recycled consumables, each according to his artistic vision, and moving away from the traditional art, added a spirit of renewal in the various departments of the college, which says that art is in the service of society.

The Vice Dean for Scientific and Administrative Affairs and Head of the Sculpture Department, Dr. Ikhlas Al-Faqih, indicated that the students of the department acquired new skills in recycling waste from iron and rock, which are characterized by durability and strength, considering that the products they presented have aesthetic and special artistic characteristics.

While the Head of the Graphic Design and Multimedia Department, Dr. Sonia Alam El Din, pointed out that the second year students in the department worked on drawing characters and embodying them with recycled cardboard dough, while the third year students implemented the aquatic environment project by recycling waste in an invitation to protect the seas and oceans and not throw waste in them. In the fourth year, they interacted interactively with environmental waste, as they wore models they made as an artistic expression that seeks to confirm their role as artists in protecting the planet from pollution.

While the supervisor of the students of the Department of Interior Architecture, Magdi Salloum, and the supervisor of the students of the graphic department, Nagham Nasr, called for the repetition of holding these exhibitions because of their richness and benefit to the students.

Both third-year students, Hamsa Al-Faour and Maya Abu Fakher, indicated that this experience increases and refines the artist's experiences, which was confirmed by the two second-year students, Graphic Department, Marah Al-Aawar and Ghaida Farhat, who considered that the diversity of materials and the use of new techniques enriched their experience.
