Regardless of their high losses in the state elections in Schleswig-Holstein, the FDP expects a good chance in the NRW elections next Sunday.
The result was not what we would have liked, admitted party leader Christian Lindner on Monday in Berlin.
In North Rhine-Westphalia, however, the situation is different: "We don't have a Prime Minister there who is as popular as Daniel Günther in Schleswig-Holstein.
Berlin - And in North Rhine-Westphalia it is very much about the coalition question."
It makes a difference, especially in NRW, whether there is a government of the center with a strong FDP or a government in which the Greens play a defining role, said Lindner.
The FDP, with its top candidate Joachim Stamp, is striving for "a continuation of the successful black-yellow government".
“That is our election goal there,” said Lindner.
"Otherwise, the FDP will join a government when a middle-of-the-road policy can be made."
So far, the FDP has formed a Jamaica coalition in Schleswig-Holstein together with the CDU and the Greens.
While both coalition partners made strong gains in the election on Sunday, the FDP lost 5.1 points and fell from 11.5 to 6.4 percent, according to preliminary results.

Your top candidate Bernd Buchholz spoke of a "certain disappointment".
75 percent of citizens were satisfied or even very satisfied with the state government.
The coalition partners also contributed to this, said Buchholz.
"In this respect, we would of course have wished that we would also benefit a little more from it." The "very present" Prime Minister Günther, however, made the space in the middle smaller for the FDP and the satisfaction values "almost completely collected for himself".
The FDP has not yet given up hope of further participation in the government.
Buchholz said: "We would like to continue governing with Daniel Günther.
That's what we wanted before and that's what we want now afterwards." dpa
