Freshly reinvested, President Emmanuel Macron said he was "favorable" to a revision of the treaties of the European Union this Monday in Strasbourg, during the closing ceremony of the Conference on the future of Europe, a vast consultation citizen at European Union level.
“We will have to reform our texts, it is obvious.
One of the ways of this reform is the convening of a treaty revision convention.
It is a proposal from the European Parliament and I approve of it,” declared the French President to the European Parliament, for his first speech on Europe since his re-election and the Russian offensive in Ukraine.
He also proposed that the leaders of the 27 discuss it at their summit in June.
The President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, had also spoken out for a modification of the EU treaties "if necessary" and the abandonment of the unanimous vote of the 27 member countries in key areas.
“Europe should play a more important role, for example in the field of health or defence.
And we must continuously improve the functioning of our democracy,” she said.
“I will always be on the side of those who want to reform the EU to make it work better,” she added.
