An aerial bomb from the Second World War kept Germering in suspense on Sunday.

200 people had to be evacuated. The bomb was defused in the afternoon.

Germering - In Germering, a World War II bomb was found on Sunday afternoon (May 8) while gardening.

Around 200 residents had to leave their homes for several hours.

The all-clear was not given until around 4 p.m.

Ordnance clearers defused the cluster bomb, which contained around a kilo of explosives.

They won't soon forget this moment.

It is midday when the owners of a house on the village street are busy removing the roots of an old hedge.

"My husband came across something hard while shoveling," says the resident, who prefers to remain anonymous.

Her husband then dug up the metal object.

He was not particularly careful - no one thought of a bomb.

Only when the strange thing lies in front of him in its entirety does the man recognize what he has just dug up.

"We left immediately and called the police," says the woman.

Air bomb found in Germering: 150 emergency services on site

A little later, around 150 emergency services from the police, fire brigade, THW and experts from the explosive ordnance clearance service rushed to Dorfstrasse.

The site is blocked in a radius of around 100 meters.

All residents have to leave their houses and apartments.

According to the police, there are around 200 people in total.

Many find refuge with friends or relatives.

About 50 people are accommodated in the fire station of the Germeringer fire brigade.

(By the way: everything from the region is now also available in our regular FFB newsletter.)

Anneliese Hiltmair is one of them.

She actually wanted to spend a relaxed Sunday afternoon on the couch.

But that's suddenly over.

"Suddenly a fireman came and shouted that there was a bomb," Hiltmair recalls.

She packs medicine, her passport, money and the key and leaves her apartment.

Resident Robert Lehmann was in the process of feeding his baby when they were told they had to get out.

"There was no rush or even panic," says Lehmann.

He commends the emergency services.

"Everything is super organized here."

Ordnance clearance in action - "Fortunately nothing happened"

Bomb disposal will begin at approximately 3 p.m.

Ordnance clearers Michael Weiß and Sebastian Braun deal with the bomb, which weighs around ten kilograms and is loaded with one kilogram of explosives.

They can give the all-clear around 4 p.m.

The igniter could be easily removed.

The bomb is now harmless.

Mayor Andreas Haas, who had also rushed to the site, was relieved after the defusing.

"Fortunately, nothing happened," said the town hall boss.

He thanked the many emergency services for the smooth running of the action and the professional care of the evacuated Germeringer.

In the equipment house of the Germering fire brigade on Augsburger Straße, benches and tables were set up for the around 50 evacuees.
