“Degemer mat” (welcome) to the Breton flag emoji!

"Gwenn ha du", representing the black and white emblem of the Bretons, returns until May 19 on Twitter on the occasion of Europe Day, Eurovision, and Saint-Yves, announced this Monday the Brittany region.

The region and the association www.bzh, which ensures the digital promotion of Brittany on the Web, have indeed announced the launch of a new campaign “#emojiBZH”, during a press conference.

This operation allows Internet users to enter the hashtag #emojiBZH to display a flag in a tweet.

When it was launched in early 2020, the "Breton flag" emoji quickly invaded the social network, with 405,000 mentions in one month.

But despite his success, he had been rejected by Unicode, responsible for creating the new emojis.

This consortium then evoked the “difficulty of integrating on smartphones the 5,000 flag emojis that can potentially be activated in the world, and of measuring their potential use”.

“Two years ago (we had) 405,000 emojis launched on the networks, launching a great dynamic.

The ambition is to restart the operation,” indicated the president of the Brittany region Loïg Chesnais-Girard (PS) alongside David Lesvenan, president of the association www.bzh.

Support for the Alvan & Ahez group, which represents France at Eurovision

This new campaign was to allow Internet users to show their "Breton loyalty" to the EU on the occasion of May 9, Europe Day, and to support the Breton group Alvan & Ahez which will represent France at Eurovision. May 14.

The operation will end on May 19.

"We propose to end on Saint-Yves

(patron saint of jurists, lawyers and Bretons

) by momentarily saying goodbye to the Breton emoji", underlined David Lesvenan.

The operation, which is "a nod to European regions that want their emoji, Alsace, Corsica, Catalonia, Friesland, like Scotland and Wales", will also "show positive feelings” on the networks which often serve as a “spillway for hatred”, according to him.

"Unicode has a habit of activating between 80 and 120 flags per year", recalls David Lesvenan who still hopes to obtain the permanent creation of a Breton emoji.
