NATO boss Stoltenberg calls on Putin to end the war

6:36 a.m .:

On the “Day of Victory” over Hitler’s Germany, NATO asked Russia’s President Vladimir Putin to stop hostilities in Ukraine immediately.

"I am calling on President Putin once again on May 9 to end the war immediately, withdraw his troops from Ukraine and start peace negotiations," Stoltenberg told the daily newspaper "Welt" (Monday).

"We stand firmly by Ukraine's side and will continue to help the country assert its right to self-defense."

Stoltenberg expects "that on May 9 of this year, Putin will again spread lies about NATO and the West as a whole."

During a military parade in Moscow, Putin also wants to address his compatriots with a speech.

The NATO Secretary General rejected accusations from Moscow that the western defense alliance was behaving aggressively.

“For more than seven decades we have been able to prevent war for our allies.

NATO is a defensive alliance, and the current crisis shows that it is vital for Europe and North America to stand together in NATO to secure peace and uphold the values of freedom and democracy," said Stoltenberg.

Russia's space chief threatens Musk over satellite network for Ukraine

6:30 a.m .:

The head of the Russian space agency, Dmitry Rogozin, has threatened tech billionaire Elon Musk with consequences for supplying Ukraine with satellite internet.

Musk's space company SpaceX provided the country under Russian attack with facilities to use its Starlink satellite network.

This gives you fast internet from space.

This was helpful for Ukrainian authorities and troops when mobile communications and local Internet access failed.

Rogozin wrote on the Telegram chat service on Sunday that Musk was “involved in supplying fascist forces in Ukraine with military communications”.

He will have to answer for this “like an adult”.

Musk responded on Monday night on Twitter with a joke: "If I should die under mysterious circumstances - it was good to have known you." Musk is also the head of the electric car manufacturer Tesla and is currently trying to buy Twitter.

Roskosmos boss Rogozin is a vocal supporter of the Russian attack on Ukraine and speaks, among other things, of a war in which Russia's survival is at stake.

He also wrote on Telegram on Sunday that Russia could destroy the NATO countries in a nuclear war within half an hour - "but we must not allow it because the consequences of a nuclear exchange of blows would affect the state of our earth".

Military parade in

Moscow

commemorating victory over Nazi Germany

6:25 a.m .:

Russia holds its traditional military parade (08:00 a.m. CEST) on Monday in the capital Moscow to commemorate the end of World War II and the victory over Nazi Germany.

Thousands of soldiers are said to march across Moscow's Red Square for the occasion, followed by tanks and rocket launchers and fighter jets flying overhead.

President Vladimir Putin is expected to give a speech.

In it, he could also make new announcements related to Ukraine.

For weeks, the Russian leadership has repeatedly drawn parallels between the Second World War and the military operation in the neighboring country, which according to official statements is to be "demilitarized" and "denazified".

"Today, like their ancestors, our soldiers fight shoulder to shoulder to liberate their homeland from Nazi filth," Putin said on Sunday.
