The CDU leadership sees the election victory in Schleswig-Holstein as an important tailwind for the state elections in North Rhine-Westphalia next Sunday.

NRW Prime Minister Hendrik Wüst said on Monday, when he arrived together with the Schleswig-Holstein election winner Daniel Günther at meetings of the CDU leadership in Berlin, the success in Schleswig-Holstein showed:

Berlin - "The people's party CDU is fully there.

And people also appreciate good government work that ensures more security, a modern economy and secure jobs.”

The CDU clearly won the state elections in Schleswig-Holstein on Sunday with 43.4 percent of the vote and an increase of 11.4 points.

With 16.0 percent, the SPD slipped to its historically worst result in the state (minus 11.3 points) and fell behind the Greens.

With 18.3 percent, they achieved their best election result so far in a state election in Schleswig-Holstein (plus 5.4 points).

The FDP, previously part of the Jamaica coalition, fell to 6.4 percent (minus 5.1 points).

Schleswig-Holstein is approaching stable conditions, said Wüst.

"That's exactly what North Rhine-Westphalia is about, what we're campaigning for in the next few days: to become the strongest force and thereby get a clear government mandate for stable conditions." Günther said he was aware "that it is of great importance, this state election as a whole, also in Germany and of course a week before North Rhine-Westphalia".

Looking at Wüst, he said: "And if there is a bit of tailwind for you too, then I think it's not to the detriment of the CDU."

After his success Günther was relaxed.

When asked if he was sober again after the celebrations the night before, he replied: "Nope, at least not completely." It was good for him to have breakfast with Wüst.

"That felt good because I didn't eat much last night, but rather drank.

And then today to catch up on the right thing again, it was a good feeling.

And also to talk about how things went for us in Schleswig-Holstein.”

The Hessian Prime Minister Volker Bouffier called the CDU victory in the north a motivating boost for NRW: "If things go well, then you free up some energy again." North Rhine-Westphalia.

In NRW, the CDU and SPD are in a close race in polls.

The result of the election in the most populous federal state next Sunday is also a mood test for the new CDU chairman Friedrich Merz, who comes from North Rhine-Westphalia.
