Roast pork as a classic not excluded.

First Corona, now inflation as a result of the Ukraine war: The gastronomy in the district is shaken.

The guests get to feel that too.

But the hosts are brave.

County

– Not only are energy costs skyrocketing, but so are food prices.

The restaurateurs in the Freising district are feeling this particularly clearly these days, and after two years of the pandemic they are not having an easy time anyway.

"The purchase is a disaster," says Thierry Willems from Bräustüberl Weihenstephan in Freising.

“We have to write menus like on the stock exchange.

What we put on the table today will no longer fit tomorrow.” Meat in particular has become 50 percent more expensive within two weeks.

In the Bräustüberl Weihenstephan, nothing has become more expensive than one euro

Willems is now passing this price increase on to the guests – out of necessity.

"We did it moderately, nothing has become more than one euro more expensive," he emphasizes.

"After all, we don't want people to be unable to afford to eat out." He didn't change the drink prices.

What annoys the operator of the Bräustüberl the most: "I think that many of whom we depend on are abusing the current situation and want to justify price increases.

The state would have to intervene from time to time.” Willems does not hold back his anger on the phone: “Ultimately, the very small consumer is the one who suffers.

The common man gets really screwed.”

When the omicron wave began to level off some time ago, he was optimistic.

"But now, with the war and inflation, we have the next crisis," says Willems.

“Getting out of this story is difficult.

But it doesn't help anything."

Inflation and the Ukraine war: Meat and vegetables are significantly more expensive

“The price increases have a significant impact,” says Anna Elisabeth Hofmeier from the hotel and country inn of the same name in Hetzenhausen (Neufahrn municipality).

“Suppliers have been sending out notifications almost weekly that delivery costs or product prices are increasing.

We are already dizzy from all the increases.” Meat and vegetables in particular have risen enormously in price.

"The explosive increase in energy costs is also having a massive impact on us."

Because of inflation: The onion roast now costs 25 euros

The result: the food and drink menu has been adjusted.

The light beer no longer costs 3.70, but 3.90 euros, the price for a wheat beer rose by 20 cents to 4.10 euros.

The roast pork has become one euro more expensive and now costs 14.20.

The onion roast, for which a beautiful and now enormously expensive loin of beef is necessary, was previously between 21 and 22 euros.

“Now we are at almost 25 euros.

That's a house number," admits Hofmeier.

"But unfortunately we have no other choice." After two years of the pandemic, no restaurateur would have the reserves to absorb the price increases, the DEHOGA district chairman knows.

She is also aware that the higher prices on the card may have an impact on customers.

"People probably don't go out to eat as often as they used to." Nevertheless, Hofmeier doesn't want to whine: After the recent relaxation of the corona virus, business got off to a good start again, especially over Easter.

The first weddings have even been celebrated in Hetzenhausen.

"As far as that is concerned, the order books are full until October." What has recently been shown: "People are happy to finally go out again, to be in company and to celebrate.

They're really starving," said the DEHOGA district chair.

Another problem in the gastronomy: lack of staff

However, the personnel situation is still difficult: According to Hofmeier, the recently decided gradual wage increase of 27 percent in the catering trade - another burden for employers - could be an incentive.

But during the pandemic, an enormous number had reoriented themselves to jobs whose working hours were more compatible with leisure activities.

"So we really have to struggle with the personnel situation."

Lukas Kammermeier reports something similar from the Hotel and Gasthof Drei Tannen in Moosburg.

"We've been looking for a kitchen assistant for three months, it's really tough."

(By the way: everything from the region is now also available in our regular Freising newsletter.)

Restaurateurs confident despite the Ukraine war and inflation: "Sticking your head in the sand doesn't do anything"

Rising food prices are also causing him problems.

"Everything that has to do with wheat, oil and meat has gone particularly high," says Kammermeier.

“Certain types of vegetables have also become significantly more expensive.

For example, Romanesco, with whom we work a lot, now costs twice as much as it did in January.” That's why they felt compelled to raise prices a bit.

"It's still a long way from catching what the dealers have thrown at it.

But our guests fight themselves.

If the schnitzel suddenly costs 20 euros, nobody can afford it anymore.”

Kammermeier is nonetheless combative: “burying your head in the sand is useless.

I always say: if we got through the last two years, then we can do it now.”
