The Curriculum Development Office of the Education Bureau announced today (10th) that it will provide 58 Applied Learning (ApL) courses for students and schools to choose from for the 2025 HKDSE students, including 6 new ones


The Curriculum Development Office of the Education Bureau announced today (10th) that it will provide 58 Applied Learning (ApL) courses for students and schools to choose from for the 2025 HKDSE students, including 6 new courses, namely Fintech Introduction, Smart Digital Architecture, Creative English - Business and Media, Creative English - PR and Marketing, Living Japanese and Japanese Culture, Applied Japanese and Japanese Culture.


According to the Education Bureau, schools intending to offer Applied Learning courses for the 2022/23 school year for Secondary 4, or for the 2023/24 school year for Secondary 5, must prepare to submit applications for students.

The registration period is from May 20 to June 2 this year, and from February 22 to April 12, 2023.


The Education Bureau is offering 6 more Applied Learning course options for HKDSE students in 2025.

This school year, 167 schools offered Applied Learning courses at the Secondary 4 level, with about 5,180 students enrolled.

The Curriculum Development Office of the Education Bureau stated today (10th) that applied learning is one of the elective subjects of the senior secondary curriculum. The curriculum content emphasizes both practice and theory, in order to make the learning content more relevant to the latest developments in different majors and occupational fields.

The spokesman said that taking the applied learning course "Introduction to Fintech" as an example, the course allows students to understand the emerging engineering industry of fintech and understand the general situation of the fintech industry; in line with the development of the construction industry towards digitalization, the applied learning course "Smart Digital Building" To enable students to understand the latest developments in the construction industry and construction technology, and to master the theory and application of construction management and civil engineering.

"Applied Learning Chinese" for non-Chinese speaking students

Most of the applied learning covers six study areas, including creative learning, media and communication, business management, and applied science. There is also an "Applied Learning Chinese" for non-Chinese speaking students to provide them with another way to obtain Chinese qualifications, so as to facilitate further studies and employment path.

According to the Education Bureau, Applied Learning courses develop students' knowledge through simulation or real situations, so that students can deepen their understanding of Vocational and Professional Education and prepare themselves for further studies and employment.

The Education Bureau also recommends that schools arrange suitable activities to deepen students' and parents' understanding of the Applied Learning curriculum, and provide students with subject selection guidance.
