There are insufficient electric vehicle charging spaces in Hong Kong. The government plans to convert some petrol stations and gas filling stations into fast charging stations.
Shell Corporation of Hong Kong (Shell) announced that it will open a petrol station outside the cargo center at Chek Lap Kok Airport in June.
The oil power station covers an area of more than 5,000 square meters and has four charging points for electric vehicles and 16 refueling points.
In terms of charging, fast charging costs 64 yuan per hour, while medium-speed charging costs 21 yuan for two hours, but for the time being, payment can only be made in the mobile app.
Shell also stated that the company currently operates 41 petrol stations in Hong Kong, and it is estimated that 30% of them can be equipped with charging stations, mainly located in the larger petrol stations in the New Territories.

Liang Shumin, general manager of Shell's retail business, said that the upcoming oil power station will mainly serve airport vehicles and residents of Tung Chung.
She said that the company will gradually introduce charging solutions, with the goal of providing 300 charging spots in Hong Kong in the short term.
She also pointed out that Shell currently operates 41 petrol stations in Hong Kong. After assessment, it is believed that 12 of them have enough safe distances to install charging facilities, mainly involving larger petrol stations in the New Territories.
Liang Shumin explained that in the past, the design of gas stations did not consider the need to add charging facilities. Some gas stations, especially those located in urban areas, have a narrow area and there is no extra space for charging stations.
She emphasized that it is a transitional stage, "The first step is to add charging facilities, but with the popularization of electric vehicles, I believe it will gradually change."
Liang also emphasized that Shell also has experience in installing charging stations around the world, such as installing charging stations on lampposts in the UK, and setting up pilot swap stations in the Mainland. "I hope to introduce experience from all over the world to Hong Kong to help expand charging stations."
