The former corrections officer who helped a murder suspect escape died Monday night at a hospital after a crash and a chase, authorities said.

Casey White, 38, and Vicky White, 56, were captured after a chase with authorities in Indiana that ended in a crash, Lauderdale County Sheriff Rick Singleton told reporters.

The woman allegedly helped Casey White escape from an Alabama jail last month.

"This ends a very long, stressful and challenging week and a half," Singleton said.

Casey White turned himself in to police after the crash, Singleton said.

Vicky White was taken to a hospital for injuries that have not been specified.

The couple was arrested after Casey White was seen on security camera washing a Ford F-150 pickup truck in Evansville, Indiana.

The business owner provided authorities with security camera footage, which the agency confirmed showed White, the U.S. Marshals Service said.

Authorities have said he had a "special relationship" with Vicky White, 56, a former Lauderdale County Jail employee.

Authorities have said she helped him escape on his last day of work.

Vicky White did not appear in the photos of the car wash.

A warrant was issued for his arrest earlier this month for allegedly facilitating or allowing Casey White's April 29 escape.

Casey White was charged with two counts of capital murder in September 2020 for the stabbing of 58-year-old Connie Ridgeway and was already in jail for breaking and entering, carjacking and police pursuit in 2015, according to the US Marshals Service. .

White confessed to stabbing Ridgeway and was awaiting trial at the Lauderdale County Jail when he disappeared, according to authorities.

The Marshals Service said investigators learned that, prior to his sentencing in 2015, he "threatened his ex-girlfriend and her sister, warning them that if he ever came out he would kill them and that he also wanted the police to kill him."

The US Marshals Service was offering up to $10,000 for information leading to the capture of White and an additional $5,000 for information leading to the capture of Vicky White.

Officers became aware of the two missing around 3:30 pm on April 29, when dialing Vicky White's phone only answered voice mail, after repeated attempts to contact her, Singleton said.

Vicky and Casey White left the detention center to attend a mental health evaluation in court.

But investigators later confirmed that screening was never scheduled, Singleton said.

At the time of her departure, Vicky White told another officer that she planned to go to a medical appointment after dropping off Casey White because she was not feeling well.

But she didn't have an appointment scheduled, Singleton said.

She transported the suspect herself, a violation of the policy that requires two sworn officers to transport people with those charges, the sheriff said.

For months, Vicky White had talked about retiring.

She sold her house and her last day of work as a Lauderdale County corrections officer was supposed to be April 29, the day she and Casey White disappeared.
