The fifth wave of the epidemic reached its peak in early March, with more than 70,000 confirmed cases a day, and many public hospitals were overwhelmed.

At that time, Dr. He Xiaohui, who shed tears at a staff meeting in the hospital, has practiced medicine for 36 years and is a consultant doctor in the emergency department of the Iraqi Hospital.

He was recently awarded the 2022 Outstanding Employee Award by the Hospital Authority. When he mentioned that he shed tears on the spot that day, he confessed that it was not because of personal pressure, but because he saw his colleagues working hard, so he was touched for a while, and he admitted that his colleagues never gave up, and no one was Deserters, "everyone do their best."

He Xiaohui, 60, who has witnessed the fire in the Carrie Building, the SARS attack in Hong Kong, and the fifth wave of COVID-19 cases in the hospital, has reached retirement age. He was on vacation before the Lunar New Year. Last day on the 30th (last work day), but due to the fifth wave of invasion of Hong Kong in mid-February, Queen Elizabeth Hospital was busy with work, so he returned to the hospital to help and decided to delay his retirement for half a year.

Tears are not due to work pressure: I feel a moment when I see my colleagues working hard

At the staff meeting of the hospital in March this year, He Xiaohui wept a man's tears, and the clip leaked out on the Internet, causing a lot of responses.

In a recent interview with the media for winning the Outstanding Employee Award, he admitted that he did not cry because of personal pressure that day.

He said that that day was because he saw his colleagues working hard, and he was touched for a while.

However, he didn't want to talk more about the harsh environment in which the hospital services were overwhelmed and patients had to coexist with their remains in the ward.

I have been a doctor for many years without any pressure. As a doctor, I don’t have to take time off work when I’m expected to be a doctor.

Dr. He Xiaohui

When the fifth wave of the epidemic hit, He Xiaohui believed that his colleagues were discouraged, not because of physical difficulty to support the work, but because of the number of patients, "It may have been 10 or more hours, and I saw that the patient could not be handled, or it had already been handled, but Zhong didn't get to the ward." Because of the feeling of powerlessness, he collapsed.

Because collapse (collapse) means giving up, and everyone has never given up. Although everyone is a little frustrated, they all continue to work and do not desert.

However, in the eyes of He Xiaohui, the fifth wave of the epidemic did not cause the medical system to collapse. At that time, the Hospital Authority allowed infected employees to return to work if they were asymptomatic within 7 days, but he emphasized, "I have never seen a single infected colleague with more than No return to work on the 7th.”

Facing the epidemic and disaster threat prevention is an important part

He Xiaohui, who is "accustomed to seeing big scenes", believes that prevention is an important part of whether it is an epidemic or a disaster accident. "The best thing is not to happen." So many people don't need to die.

Just like the fifth wavelength, if a needle is available, the mortality rate can be reduced, but in many cases, "the reality will not go according to the plan, and everyone will do everything as soon as something happens."

Learning the lessons of the fifth wave, He Xiaohui believes that the sixth wave will be handled better.

Because the fifth wave already has medical treatment facilities and other community isolation facilities, and the vaccination rate has risen sharply, I believe that with the experience of the fifth wave, no matter in terms of facilities, personnel, and mentality, the sixth wave is confident that it can be handled well.

After graduating from medicine in 1986, He Xiaohui joined Queen Elizabeth Hospital and joined the emergency department to develop trauma services by chance.

I recalled that when I first graduated, I was an intern for only 3 months. At that time, there was a traffic accident. A van driver crashed into the fence and was pierced by the iron pass.

"At 3 or 4 o'clock in the morning, I called someone to see the disease, and the injured person was sent to the side. At first, I thought there was a corpse." He Xiaohui said that he was at a loss at that time, but fortunately, he was able to rescue the injured in the end.

Since then, he felt that trauma services were worthwhile, and in 1994 he moved to work in the emergency department.

Be enthusiastic about helping patients

He Xiaohui believes that the attitude of being a doctor is the most important, because practicing medicine requires not only knowledge and skills, but also a good attitude, whether towards yourself, patients or colleagues.

Especially for patients, as a doctor, you should think about the patient, "it is really necessary to advise the patient and the family in a timely manner", and provide the best choice, rather than "compare one wave with others", and maintain an enthusiastic help to the patient. Attitude, "patients can feel it".

Although he has reached the retirement age, he bluntly said that because his wife has not yet retired, he may take a rest for a month or two and then return to the hospital to continue clinical work, but he will no longer be engaged in management work.
