Jordanian Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi spoke tonight (Tuesday) against Prime Minister Naftali Bennett's remarks on the Temple Mount: "There is no Israeli sovereignty in the holy places in Jerusalem - this is occupied Palestinian land," he claimed in an interview with the Jordanian Al-Malka channel.
"Israel has no sovereignty in the al-Aqsa Mosque - it is a place of Muslim worship, only the Jordanian Waqf has full authority over the management of the compound."
Safadi expressed hope for calm, but said "the way there is by respecting the status quo."
He accused Israel of "making it difficult for all the Waqf's steps to maintain security in the al-Aqsa Mosque and interfering with Waqf members' duties. The Waqf office has appointed dozens of new workers to the Al-Aqsa Mosque complex but Israel is putting obstacles in their way."

A month and a half ago, a request from Jordan was rejected to increase the number of Waqf guards on the Temple Mount by about 50 guards, the Prime Minister's Office said today.
It was also reported that in recent weeks, six Hamas-backed Waqf guards have been removed from the Temple Mount, and 12 new Waqf members have been staffed under existing standards.
"There is no change or new development in the situation on the Temple Mount - Israel's sovereignty is preserved," the Prime Minister's Office said.
"All decisions on the Temple Mount will be made by the Israeli government out of considerations of sovereignty, freedom of religion and security, and not out of pressure from foreign or political factors."
